Here is another car that had no problem getting plenty of power down to the track. Tony V sent me this pic, so I am not sure what track this is or who is driving the 57 that appears to be seconds away from some serious damage.

This one is not as wild as the other pics but it is closely related to slot cars. 57 chevy wheelie at the starting line, racing Gary Wright's Willys at Coles County Dragway in Charleston Illinois. The next post will explain how this car is directly related to the H.O. slot cars. The picture quality isn't the best but it was getting dark when I took the pic and I was pretty far down track from the starting line. I was a bit early when snapping the pic b/c Wright's Willy's did a nose up launch too. If I had waited a second later, I would have caught both cars leaving the line in a wheelie....just difficult to time it when they are bracket racing vs leaving heads up.

And now the explanation of how these pics are slot car related. Ever wonder where JL got the paint scheme for the flamed JL willys TJETS? Note that the Wright's willys has a small rear wing that didn't make it on the diecast or TJET versions of the car.

Not sure about the copies of 1:1 cars to slot cars but there are quite a few street/muscle cars and drag cars that JL did as diecast versions of various people's 1:1 cars. I can't recall what the series of diecast was called but there were a bunch.

i think all these stories and shots are slot related.............the REAL cars are what inspire us in the first place. Having said that..heres two photos of the somewhat unusual......keep them coming guys, pics of the weird, the wild, and anything that 'bends' the norm! First is an ultimate light weight drag (car?) i think its possibly a rocket powered shopping cart. next up is an early interpretation of a 'stretched" funny car. You don't suppose thats a digger under that body do ya?

parallel parking would be kinda tough, huh.
didnt someone build full size examples of many of the early Hot Wheels?? Seems I saw some photos of them from some car show. Kind of the reverse of the little cars following the bigs!
Also: only something like nine weeks (give or take) til the season opener at Pomona (NHRA) Can't wait! (pictures to follow)

The Phony Pony has something in common with A member here at psychoslots.
Username "Tbolt" (Tom) family owns it and are restoring it. Maybe Tom can tell us a little more about it. I know he's looking for all the info he can find on it.

Thanks for posting the pictures Sam, one of these days I will figure it out! Now about the Phony Pony, They started out with an AFX long nose fiberglass Mustang body. It was narrowed 18"and lengthened 36". In 1965 it cost $10,000 to build. Speed Products Engineering built a dragster chassis for the car. Originally it had 2 blown 289's however he could not get them to work together. Jr then went to 1 blown 289. When he changed it to the blue paint scheme 1 Enderle fuel injected 289 with a C4 automatic. We are about 1/2 way through the restoration project and hope to have it done for the Crackle Fest at the 2008 US Nationals.
