Made some more runs today and ended with catastrophic failure. Let the magic smoke out of the unlimited motor. Not exactly sure what happened. Windings are smoked in a couple of places. Also shredded the 20t plastic idler gear so it was making good power. If you click on the picture it will take you to Flikr where it can be blown up for a better view. Time for brass. I have another motor and will do a couple of things differently. That is actually the first armature that I've ever burned up like that.

Nice work Jeff! I am surprised you smoked that gear. I have smoked a multitude of pancake armatures including stock 14s and mean greens. I have not tried the one I built on 26 volts yet for fear of losing the crown and cluster gears. Will have to give it a shot at that voltage but first I will make sure the gear clearance is very tight. Tires are low traction so I think it will hold up.

how about a pic of the smoked arm? sorry you had this failure. as Sgrigg discovered ....... he went through a lot of "prototype" builds of t-jet outlaws eliminating "weak links" as he went along. armatures rarely failed, other parts sometimes shredded as did your idler. try, try again

I just wanted to see how long it would hold up. I have a brass one for it. The 26t will be ok. It's big enough that it can handle the rpms. I will take a pic of the arm tomorrow and post it. I already cleaned everything up. I guess I should have taken some pics before I did so. I think smoking the arm was just a fluke. We shall see....

Well.....now it's scramble time. As it turns out the other 2ohm motor I have has advanced timing for a 3 gear. I may throw it in there and see how a 4 gear "torque monster" performs because it will have as much retarded timing as it can get. I have several other 3ohm motors but that's not what we wanted to spec for this build. I will post whatever I do. Here is a couple of pics of the toasted armature. I was on the controller and was looking at the car when it smoked. So I let off pretty quick. Some cooking in the windings and it burned the wires loose from the top tab. The comm had melted plastic from the chassis on it that I already cleaned off. My theory is that it generated enough heat to start melting itself to the chassis and that kept compounding itself till it seized. Then all the magic smoke came out. I will set the pinion gear lower on the next armature if that looks like it will be a problem. That will raise the arm off the bottom of the chassis.

As one thing got improved, the weak link would move to something else. I have found that on these it stops at the 26t. Everything from there back to the axle is metal. Like I said in my last post, I think the armature melted itself to the chassis and seized. I will take the hit for that one for having the armature riding that low in the chassis. I will make the correction and it should be good to go. These things can and should be expected in these builds but that is the fun part of it for me.....figuring it out. Anything can be fixed, it's only about time. The good thing is....it takes some good power to shred that particular gear !!

acknowledged, the power to melt theory! LOL a 2 ohm shouldn't develop that much heat so quick. I cannot give you any advice, you are still faster than I am! look forward to your exploits and how future runs go. the "retarded" arm will get you great 60' but it will be at top RPM too quickly and not develop the same top end RPM as advanced timing. have fun!

Does look like one of the windings unsoldered itself. I have some extra magic smoke if you need some. It is floating around my race track, just have to catch it and bottle it up! Funny it sounds like the exact same thing I went thru with full size cars. One weak link after another until most of the parts are fairly bullet proof.

This is what I do to stiffen the chassis back up after the tabs have been cut to fit under a body, drill the chassis and add a staple from a staple gun, works like a champ.

I have found Neo motor magnets in pancake builds to be almost useless in anything over 1 ohm, they will slow it down.
