Just a quick note: John Force clocked his first run yesterday after his crash last year. It was six second pass, due to tire slip, but its still a run! Second Note: The new 90 percent nitro limit is already in play; Tony Schumacher's FIRST run yielded a 4.51 pass. Looks like they be all over the the 4.40's this weekend as the track is still pretty green and speeds normally pickup as the week end progresses. Oh BTW this is the first event of the 2008 season. As usual it is at Fairplex Speedway in Pomona. Some of our own board are in attendance and Ill get a first hand report. My financial advisor (wife) says we need to skip this race in order to attend the Phoenix race later this month. How can I complain; she has already agreed to go to Las Vegas for our anniversary and attend the the race there.
Wow things change fast!! Rookie driver Antron Brown, (last year a prostock motorcycle competitor) just turned a 4.495 at 330 miles per hour in his second official pass as a pro Top Fuel driver. He is currently the number one qualifier, with two more qualifying runs tomorrow.

John,
I was an AHRA fan in the 1960's.Richard thingy Landy, Don Yenko and Richard thingy Harrell were my heros. Loved early AFX, Fuel Altereds, Gassers and Funny cars. Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines were my "comic books" as a kid. NHRA, NASCAR , CART have become cooke cutter sanctions IMHO. When a race body becomes super popular and commercialized, I tend to follow the underdog sanction. I am an IHRA fan, (SCCA and IMSA road racing fan too !!!)
My local track is IHRA sanctioned, Milan Dragway. Kinda nostalgic as it is not a mega buck drag track and has minimal facilities. Still cool though.
I have attended races since 1967. I remember attending, and later racing at the old N.Y. National Speedway on L.I.N.Y., Keystone Raceway Park in New Alexandria , PA and Quaker City Dragway in Salem , OH. Condos now reside on the N.Y. site. Only two of them left and under different names now and sanctions. Pittsburgh Raceway Park and Quaker City Raceway ( respectively).
I converted to and became an IHRA fan when they "invented" the Pro Mod class in the early to mid 1980's and it ceased being an exhibition class. It grabbed my full attention when it reminded me of the "gasser" classes of the mid '60's - the early '70's. I never looked back. Most of the cars look like real cars too. The power of a supercharged or nitrous injected V8 is truly awesome.
Side Bar Note: I can't believe that the post won't allow me to state the racers name because it sounds like slang for the male anatomy appendage. Replaces the word with "thingy". That's a little extreme fellas. If a member / poster uses foul language, just remove them from the board. Just a suggestion.

Proboards have a bunch of names that are considered foul such as "dick" preset to change to a less offensive term. Should work now.

My favorite here is Famoso Speedway in Bakersfield. They run Hot Rod reunions and Good Guys Nostalgia drags. They become cookie cutter because huge dollar sponsorships are on the line. Not much risk taking or huge innovation.

Richard "thingie" Landy? now thatttttt is funny. How about "tricky ""Thingie"" Nixon??? Ill still mostly report NHRA because its one I can follow locally to a certain extent. (Season opener and Finals in So cal) No pro mod in sight here, but i agree about the look and feel of them. In previous post I meant BIG Bodies like nhra become cookie cutter.........not famoso speedway

Quick news hit (pressed for time today)........... Winternationals...... John Force made it semis lost to teamtae Robert Hight. Ashley Force defeated in semis as well. Hight goes on to win class. Top Fuel is guess who....Schumacher! Antron brown's qualifying run of 4.495 stands up as low e.t. of the meet. BTW Tony Pedregon stayed in the hospital about one hour after his crash/fire against John Force. He is very likely to race next at phoenix.

John, ya missed a great race in Pomona. The Force/Pedregon race was worth the price of admission. Pedregon hurried up and did a quality but very quick burnout and backed up fast while Force was just beginning his burnout which wasn't as excessively long as he usually is. While Force was backing up pretty quickly the Pedregon crew had the body up and pulled the throttle stop off, made their adjustments and cleaned the tires fast. Body down and pulled up to almost turn on the pre-stage bulb. I haven't seen Austin Coil hustle that fast in a long time. The moment they latched Forces body down Pedregon turned on the pre-stage and made John hustle up and stage. When the tree came down I thought Force was really late and he was some but actually Pedregon red lighted trying to get the hole shot. There's no doubt in my mind he was trying to and succeeding in shaking Force. If he hadn't red lighted he would have had Force where he wanted him. Of course he would have needed the motor to hold together for about another 300 feet. One of the biggest/best explosions I've ever seen. If you go to competitionplus.com and look at the sequence of pictures you will be amazed to see Force crossing the finish line 1 foot ahead of Pedregon while Pedregon's body is gone and the car is fully engulfed in flame. Fabulous picture and fabulous race. Interesting that Robt. Hight and Greg Anderson won and they would have won the Championships last year if it wasn't for the stupid countdown. Hot Rod Fuller had low et of 1st round and was in a good spot to win also until the car laid down on him in 2nd round. Should he have won it would have been all three 2007 "Real World Champs" winning. Great weekend.

Another good drag meet in Phoenix. We stayed in Scottsdale and made the finals on Sunday. Whether was cloudy and mild and never rained. Ashley Force did not qualify but remains in top ten on the strength of her weekend in Pomona. My good fortune as she was available for autographs and pics during eliminations. John was eliminated in first round. Robert Hight was runner up and stays number one. Larry Dixon bested Schumacher in the semis and went on to win it all
Pro stock ?? yawn I was getting a Hot Dog. (give me Stockers that look like Stockers) on to Gainesville in two weeks

Isn't it weird that 25 years ago people were calling Super Stock "Stupid Stock" due to the high cost for very little prize money or serious recognition and now it's Pro Stock that's being bad mouthed due to the stupid rule changes that have made them "NASCAR cookie cutter" cars with what's really non-factory engines. Now the Hemi cars of the 60's are the gear head's star cars. Pro stock in the early 70's was really neat but not anymore. It's either bring on Pro Mod or S/S but the stands are empting when Pro Stock comes to the lines anymore.

They jusy don't excite me......... it reminds me of the latter days of Gas class as it faded from importance............there were fast funny cars.....and slowwwwwww funny cars ( late model; gassers) How about making them shift with a muncie four speed and a real clutch?....
