Awards and Prizes
Before the haulers leave Lions Drag Strip and head for home, there are a couple of items on the NTRA World Finals to-do list to check off: post-race inspection and the award ceremony.
The ace Lions Tech Crew runs a tight ship, and before the results were declared official, the finalists were given a visual inspection and the winners torn down. We do this to reassure every entrant that the cars that won met the letter of the NTRA rules.
The first car to the teardown barn was EagleRacing's NFC-winning Camaro. It's built on an Aurora specialty chassis without traction magnets and with AW pickup shoes. The JL/AW armature has no visible signs of balancing, and the resistance measured 15.2/15.2/15.3 ohms at 88 degrees (14.0 ohm minimum). The slip-on tires were mounted on dual-flange wheels and were under the maximum size. The verdict: Legal! EagleRacing is your 2012 NTRA World Finals Nostalgia Funny Car winner!
Next in line for tech inspection was Falcon's Gasser. It uses an JL/AW chassis and gearplate, stock plastic gears, braids and shunts, silicone/foam slicks, AW/JL motor magnets, and two traction magnets. The Mean Green arm was balanced and measured 5.9/5.9/6.0 ohms at 88 degrees (5.0 ohm minimum). The verdict: Legal! Congratulations to Falcon, the 2012 NTRA World Finals Gasser champion!
With that business out of the way, it's time to distribute the awards and prizes. Big, big thanks to NTRA's sponsors and supporters for the amazing selection of goodies this year. We've got more stuff to hand out than we have racers!
The winners in NFC and Gas will each receive a three-volume DVD set of "Lions – the World's Greatest Drag Strip" (but you knew that already, right?) Courtesy of producer Don Gillespie, this set is a must-see for anyone with a love of drag racing history. All the great racers and personalities who raced and worked at Lions from 1955 to 1972 are included in this outstanding video documentary. For more information on "Lions -- The Greatest Drag Strip," or to purchase your own copy, see www.lionsvideo.com.
The winner of the Best Appearing Award will also receive a set of Lions DVDs. This was an incredibly difficult decision for the Lions crew to make – there were easily a dozen cars that deserved the Best Appearing award. In the end, it came down to Dragfool's pair of Nostalgia Funny Cars – the Showtime Pinto and Paycheck Vega. Both are beautifully painted with fade-away colors and detailed to the max, right down to the parachute cords. And it didn't hurt that green (the color of money, may we remind you) is Aurora Divine's favorite. So congratulations to Dragfool, team owner of the Best Appearing Cars at the 2012 NTRA Finals!
But wait, there's more! We've asked Aurora Divine to do her best Vanna White impersonation and take us through the other prizes that will be distributed to NTRA Finals entrants in a random draw. And don't forget that NTRA coordinator Ninjatek will be sending out bonus prizes as well.
EagleRacing not only builds killer Funny Cars, but he also makes amazing bodies. He's donated four beautifully painted ready-to-race resin shells. In the foreground is a front-engined slingshot dragster for a Mega G chassis. Next is a Pro Stock Pinto (Super G+ or G3 chassis), a Pro Stock '69 Camaro (Super G+, G3) and a Pro Stock Truck (Mega G 1.7). Fantastic!
EagleRacing also sent a set of custom NTRA World Finals decals with flames, stripes and sponsors, along with a pair of Eagle Racing silicone/foam tires. They measure .606" diameter and have yellow lettering. Thanks, Eagle!

Or you can just click on the link at the bottom of this page to see Eagle Racing's great selection of bodies!
HairyCanary has been a sponsor and supporter of NTRA drag racing since the Psychoslots days, and he's continued his generosity for the 2012 NTRA Finals by supplying 11 bodies as prizes. All of Hairy's bodies include windshields and accessories such as blowers, scoops, parachutes, and wheelie bars as appropriate to the class. The design and workmanship is first class. For more info, contact hairycanaryjr@aol.com, or click on the link at the bottom of this page.
And did you know that Rick Williamson ("HairyCanary" to his friends at NTRA) won Top Fuel Eliminator at the biggest nostalgia drag race in the country, the NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield, Calif., last month? That's real nitro-burning dragsters, sports fans, not the little electric cars we race. Congratulations, Rick!
First we have three NFC bodies for four-gear chassis – a '70 Cuda, Mach 1 Mustang, and an Omni. OK, Aurora, show us the other bodies that HairyCanary sent.
You want T-Jet Gassers? We got 'em. How about a pair of '33 Willys, a Henry J, and a chopped Austin coupe that would be perfect for a Big John Mazmanian replica.
If late-model bodies are your style, then take a look at HairyCanary's cool Camaros. There's a Pro Mod '69 Camaro for a T-jet chassis, a Pro Mod '69 Camaro for a 4-gear, a 2010 Camaro Pro Mod for 4-gear, and a Pro Stock Firebird for a 4-gear. Wow!
Our good friend Kdog has been a big part of HO slot car drag racing on this board since its beginning. The Dog came through with 10 Model Motoring Willys bodies! If that doesn't make you want to build a Gasser, then you haven't got a pulse. Many thanks to Kdog! Click on the link at the bottom of this page to see Kdog's amazing customs listed on eBay, or send him a PM and have him build a car to your specs.
And last but not least, Ninjatek will send two lucky racers a custom-embroidered NTRA polo shirt. Winners will be contacted for their shirt size and color preference.
The haulers will be heading home later this week in the care of Phyllis the Mail Lady, an agent of the United States government who takes her job very seriously. Racers, check your boxes carefully when they arrive – you never know what prizes you may find inside!
That's a wrap on the 2012 NTRA World Finals. Take care, everyone, I'll see you at the starting line next season.
