Totally new to the sport looks like hell of a good time. I have an unfinished basement and would like info on getting a complete set up track wise. Looking for something for a beginner but nothing that is junk. Anyone that could point me in the right direction.

I just race for fun so I use an AutoWorld drag strip; they're priced very reasonably and work pretty good for what they are. Some guys have MaxTrax custom strips with SlotDragon; and others which can be fairly expensive. It depends on how much you can; or are willing to spend and what you require your track to do. I'm quite happy with a basic setup for now; you may want a pro track right away, it's all a matter of choice and affordability. ....Terry

The slot dragon timing system is pretty affordable, works well and has great tech support. There is a new system coming out this month that has been discussed on this site but it has not been tested yet. If you are looking for a Pro system then Trak Mate is a good one but their tech support is not good. Max Trax has a very nice track that can be cut to order.

It comes with everything you need to race including cars; but it's been so long since I bought mine I forget if the batteries required for the start and finish lights are included. ....Terry.

As you can see everbody likes to help..... just ask if you ever need help finding anything. Before any track is set-up a flat stable platform is needed. One that things can be fastened to and perhaps drilled through. Plastic track like AW or similar may be the easiest to start with. I would recomend laying homasote between base and track especially if track is plastic. It will reduce noise and more important absorb energy from cars running. If track is on hard surface energy is deflected back up at any joint. Some more than others a clicking noise may be heard when cars pass over joint. Homasote will help keep unwanted bounce to a minimum. ..... Peter

I should have mentioned...... The NTRA runs a proxy racing program through the site. Featuring race coverage here on NITROSLOTS. Don't have to have a track to race. Joining is easy...... check rules and schedule on home page if intrested. New season starts soon. Be great if you could join in on the fun all have ! ........ Peter

Sounds like fun.
So you are saying like a plywood then Homasote board then track.

wondering if anyone has any write ups or pics of there setups or maybe I need to be looking in another section of the forums. I think I would like to setup a cheaper plastic track first like the auto world one but like the idea of mounting it and making it a nice setup.

Look under the thread Smoky Mountain dragway for my recent track construction.
This is probably not what you want to do at the start but it will give you some ideas. The platform and legs were not very expensive. 4x8 sheets of 1/2 plywood cut in half. I did not use the Homasote as Peter suggested but it is a good idea. I have several sets of the AW drag racing start/finish sets that I was going to put on E bay. They give you a start light, foul light and winner light. They do not come with batteries. I could sell you a set for 25.00 + shipping if you like. You need AW type track to go with it. We usually try to run 15' 7.5" or a scale 1000' 1/64th scale track. All do not have the space to do that and you can run whatever you have available. ETs add a whole new dimension to racing as it then gives you some idea as to how you compare to others on the site. I went to the other extreme with the DP3000HO which has mph and other ET increments in the system.

Look down home page for HO Drag Tracks, click on Drag clubs....... list of different tracks & descriptions of builds.

There's as many different ways to set up a track as there are people. Do what your comfortable with. It's more about the fun than anything. Take a look at the different tracks and ask questions. Take a look at the 2012 Winter Nationals. That was the only race that we used a stock AW track, starting line, finish line, power packs and controllers.

beware, the Auto World 15" straights are usually bowed and make a poor race surface. the good news is that Auto World track is compatible with TOMY AFX track and can usually be had at a reasonable price on eBay. that being said, you might consider buying just the starting and finish Auto World pieces and buying TOMY AFX track. a complete AW NTB (National Tire ans Battery and or associate franchises) set comes with 23' feet of track, including 4 corners (if you want to make an oval) and four cars. the only other AW set that comes with four cars is the KISS set. all other AW drag sets come with 13' of track and two cars and are usually more expensive than the NTB set. SlotDragon is nice, but has gone up considerably in price. Summit and Jegs are debuting a very similar system with a couple advantages for $100.00 and $70.00 respectively. I am waiting for one from JEGs to test. I keep getting back order notices. it might be worth putting off purchasing any of those three until I can test the JEGs unit and give a fair report.
