Sam
You reopened the past for me with the 409 project.... It starts like this:
In 1964 when I was 11, my dad announced one Saturday we were going to the Chevy Dealer to find a new car! So we piled in our 55 Chevy (Salmon and Dark Gray) 4 door and headed out. When we got to the Dealer, we headed straight for a smooth looking Impala. Metallic Tan with a Saddle interior, and of course a 4 door (what ever). As we were talking to the salesman I noticed a crowd of folks standing around a Light Metallic Blue 2 door Chevy. The Blue looked COOL to the young DOG, so I broke into my dads conversation and said HEY look at that Blue one! They looked at me like I had no clue, and said Kid that is just a Biscayne, we are getting an Impala!
As the business of buying a car kept them busy I at some point slipped away and headed for the Biscayne. As I approached the folks that were so excited about the car, looked at the 11 year old approaching like all adults look at 11 year old boys, one man said don't touch Kid. I walked around the rear of the car thinking where is the chrome? As I walked around the passenger side I was looking for what made this car special. I saw the Biscayne lettering, and looked to the front, no more chrome? Than I saw the symbol behind the front wheel well, 409. At that time I was building model cars and and knew that the 4 speed with the pistol grip sticking through the floor was not there for show.
Fast forward to a few years back. Somehow I never could get that car out of my head. Every time the Beach Boys song came on my mind went back to that Saturday in 64.
We go to Las Vegas every year for a couple of days for the Kat's and my anniversary. At the Golden Palace Casino there is a Antique car display where everything is for sale. as we walked up the isle I saw a familiar image....The Biscayne ! I shot over there only to be scolded by Kat...HEY what about the rest of these cars. The chances of that being the same car are impossable...(although they didn't make that many Drag Specific Biscayne's in 64). My heart sank when I saw the price was $75,000. The next year it was gone. A few years past, and the Kat asked if I would like to go back to the Golden palace, and I half heartily said yea thats cool. As we entered the show room, a Light Blue Metallic Biscayne caught my eye. As I rushed over, I was once more to be scolded for passing the other cars up, but hey you have to break some eggs to make breakfast. There it was as new looking as the first day I had seen it in 1964. Same plane body, same dash board with no heater or radio, same 4 speed shifter. One thing changed.... The price was now $225,000. Hell.... The Beret Jackson guys are making it imposable for that 11 year old red headed kid to reach his American Dream !!!
Well we are headed back in late April, and you know whats on my list this time. It can go down 2 ways.... The Dog can win big, and Drive the Biscayne home, or just spend some quality time with an old friend.
