Just a question about the axles, can we use an aftermarket rear axle in these? The reason I ask is because the factory ones bend so easily, and there isn't any specifics in the rules about this. Thanks.

Also, is shimming of the axles allowed like it was in the Stock class?

Thanks. The idea of this class was to be an easy entry class for someone getting started on a budget while still being of interest to experienced builders. One of the levelers across all skill sets is that all builders are to be limited to the same parts (with the exception of tires and even those with restriction). In the first line under the heading 'Chassis', it states "no non AW/JL parts allowed." So any change of axle should only be with replacement AW/JL parts. If it is other than AW/JL stock parts, it should not be used. Also, is shimming of the axles allowed like it was in the Stock class? Shimming to remove side to side shifting of axle when needed, is considered to be of basic tuning and adjustment practice and is allowed for all NTRA classes.

OK, it's good to know.Thanks. I'll order up some new axles. The last two new cars that I've gotten have come out of the factory with bent axles.

TGM, you could always harden the axles yourself, I'm guessing that is within the rules.

Chris,I'd like to know how that is done, that could come in handy. The only problem is you would have to start with straight axles, like I said, the last two cars that I bought, for this race, both came out of the factory with bent axles. I was going to replace them with either drill blanks or piano wire, but it looks like I'll have to change that plan, I'm glad I asked beforehand.

It's been a long time since I've had to do that but you heat the steel cherry read and then quench it. I can't remember if you use water or oil to quench for hardening. One way softens so you can work it the other hardens it.

If I'm thinking right, water hardens and oil softens. Shop class memeries come roaring back. Keith

To straighten it get a piece of glass and roll the axle on it, mark the high spot and use a hard surface and a hammer to straighten it, recheck and repeat. It won't be perfect but it will be better. You could always order some new ones from Lucky Bob's or Jag Hobbies.
