My first HO drag track was Tomy track mounted on two 1 X 4" boards. One Ten foot long and one eight foot long. Just bust the tabs off the piece between the powered lanes and the shutdown lanes and then throw a short jumper under the busted off piece of track to short out the lanes. Worked well enough. The 10' length gave me the standard 1/8th mile in 1/75th or "split" scale at a length of 8'-9" and still room for 9" behind the starting line and 3" past the finish line. I screwed a couple more 1 x 4's vertically on each side to make "guardrails and extend down lower. It stiffened the track up so it didn't flex when moving and even allowed me to stand it up in the garage when not in use as the Tomy track was nailed down to the 1x4's. All the wiring was then under the track board and it works! Then I sat the two boards on a couple of saw horses with C clamps or on folding tables. Very portable and cheap to make if you have the tables or saw horses. The new $150. tracks are the way to go if you've got the coin though.
