Friends,
I've finally taken the plunge and put down a deposit on a routed drag strip -- testing on the front straight of my plastic oval track just isn't cutting it <g>. The track is going to have three 8' modules -- I have a 16' wall in the garage where I can run 1/8-mile and 1000' races, and then add the third unpowered 8' piece going out the garage door for shutdown when I want to run 1/4-mile.
Now I'm looking for some real-world advice from other track owners before I finalize the specs with the builder:
What lane spacing do you prefer? I was thinking 8-inch wide track with 4 inches between lanes (leaving 2" gutters).
Should I color code the lanes? The rails will have insulated locking wires. The surface is medium gray Sintra, so my initial thought was to use off-white/gray lock wires so they wouldn't detract from the realism. But maybe it would be better to distinguish the lanes with different colors -- "OK, Racer X, you're in the black lane this round, and Racer Y is in the white lane." Thoughts?
I'd appreciate any other input from track owners on what you'd have done differently when you built your track or how you would improve the track design.
Thanks! Rick V.

Nice Rick! Are you going with the Lions theme? Our spacing between lane slots is 4-1/2" The overall width of our track is 16" with 5" of gutter from the right lanes slot to outer edge. We made it a little wide so that we could landscape it in the future with stands, buildings etc.... We go with Left lane and Right lane here. Who's building your track?

Sam,
Great idea on making the track 16" wide. I had envisioned the scenery as being separate from the track surface, but I can see now that putting the track and return road/pits on the same board will simplify construction. I think I will follow your advice!
How did you apply the red borders, white lines, etc.? They look very sharp!
Yes, I am going with a Lions Drag Strip theme, circa 1969-70. I've found quite a few reference photos, and the Lions DVD is a treasure.
I'm getting my track from TKO (http://www.cnccustomcutting.com/id53.html). Two friends have bought road courses from Todd, and I've seen his work -- it's nice. The only down side is that the freight charges to ship the sections from Pennsylvania cost almost as much as the track <g>.
Any ideas from other track owners? I'm only going to do this once, and hoping I can do it right the first time!
Cheers, Rick V.

Rick, I taped off the area's and brushed on red enamel paint. The white lines are automotive pinstripe.

Sam,
Wow, the result looks very professional. All of my brush paint jobs end up looking like they were done by a two-year-old with a broom!
I'll definitely get some automotive striping tape for my project.
Thanks, Rick V.
