Since 1/64 scale is what is generally accepted, I'll use it here as well.
1/4 mile (1320 feet) is 20.625 feet or 20'-7 1/2"
1000 feet is 15.625 feet of 15'-7 1/2"
1/8 mile (660 feet) is 10.3125 feet or 10'-3 3/4"
This is race distance only and doesn't include any shut down area.

i have a total of 13 ft , 10ft strip with 3ft shutdown. If i only run stock t-jets do you think this is enough shutdown?

In my opinion, this is a question that has divided HO drag racers more than it has unified them and therefore I've come to the conclusion you should pick what makes you happy and not pick on anybody with something different.
Since rail height and width, groove depth, surface material/paint, power supply voltage and amperage, number of taps for power, wire diameter and attachment of controllers all add to the differences in tracks, I again believe we should pick what makes us happy and not pick on anybody with something different.
John B put out this answer to track length back in March 09. Great chart!
Track lengths are most likely determined by the track builder or club. Another important consideration is the scale of track you want to represent.
I plan on making a track and use this formula to calulate track length. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 MILE = 5280 FEET
HO 1/4 MILE = ( 1 MILE in FEET) times (desired scale) divided by (4)
HO 1/4 MILE = (5280*scale) / 4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With this formula I calculated the following track lengths. (timed length only, does not include start area and shutdown)
( Blue indicates feet and inches. Unless using a gage that shows tenths of inch, you will need to round up or down to the nearest eight, sixteenth, thirtysecond, etc. . . )
QUARTER MILE
1/64 = 20.625' = 20' - 7 1/2"
1/75 = 17.6' = 17' - 7 2/10"
1/87 = 15.172' = 15' - 2 64/100"
1000 FEET
1/64 = 15.625' = 15' - 7 1/2"
1/75 = 13.3' = 13' - 3 6/10"
1/87 = 11.49' = 11' - 5 88/100"
EIGTH MILE
1/64 = 10.3' = 10' - 3 6/10"
1/75 = 8.8' = 8' - 9 6/10"

I couldn't agree with you more Phil. We wanted the longest powered section we could fit in my basement that allowed a semi decent shutdown area. We ended up with a 16' timed track. Odd, but we could care less. We have the same amount of fun as the next group. Ultimately we would have liked to have had a 1/64 scale quarter mile but unless I hit the lotto or start digging out walls. We will be good for now.

Sam, I just noticed that by converting John's chart to feet and inches that 15 feet 2-1/16 inches is a 1/87th scale quarter mile. If you used that you would actually gain another 10" of shutdown and not damage so many Ford front bumpers in the wall. Gets you a quarter mile on true HO Tjet scale. Inline look to be 1/64th scale but pancakes are closer to 1/87th.

Nice page, and sweet Dirt Cars jaybo, the Dog lives a stones throw from Bellclair Speedway. It just isn't Spring till you hear the Late models on Friday night. I MISS SPRING....... My track is 15'- 2" a 1/87 Quarter mile...but it just happened to fit my basement. I have a 5' 3" shut down with dynamic breaking. We still put a Marshal at the end during the Gasser Race, to keep those pesky Gassers from punching a hole in the basement wall. (the dynamic breaking works better with the magnet cars than T Jets). I would fit as much track as your space allows and not worry so much about scale. We used a several rolled up shop towels spaced a few inches apart and a loose towel at the end, to absorb the shock. than layed a piece of cardboard over the top to keep them from going vertical, thus creating the TUNNEL O DEATH It would be interesting to know what the rest of you are doing, I'll try to get up some photos up tonight.

I bought some of that green 4" thick cushion foam from a JoAnn Fabric's store. At first it only helped to rebound the cars back to the starting line. Then I took it to my band saw and cut slots in it about 1/2" apart and about 4 to 5" deep. Now the cars that get loose get more of a soft cushioning before they bounce back a foot or so. Probably ought to cut the slots another inch or two deeper yet. I wish I had more shut down for the cars with little magnetic downforce. The serious cars stop fine. Since I've gone all out to make it look like a scale track, we even took a dark green magic marker to the foam before cuts were made and made the foam look more like trees and forest. Looks pretty good if ya squint.
