AFX makes this Motor Assembly tool #28852 that retails for $1.50. It's used to spread the brushes apart in the endbell to safely slide your armature in and out of it. Motor Assembly tool #28852 Endbell from the back side. Note the brushes are in the way of the armature shaft bushing. On the endbell, if your looking at the front of it. There are two slots to insert your tool. Put the tool in a neutral setting so the tips of the tool slide in between the tension fingers of the brushes. Two slots on the front Turn the tool counter clock wise to spread the brushes. Now your ready to insert your armature without damaging the brushes Here are a couple of home made motor assembly tools. This bottom one was made out of a 22 shell and the top was made out of 9/32 round brass tube. Both also are using piano wire.
