I'm currently attempting to build a Top Fuel style Dragster and was wondering what sort of length I should be aiming for. I've glued it all together and it's about 5.5 inches wheel to wheel, does that sound about right or too long? How does that compare to the old Aurora dragster? Thanks. Here's what I've done so far (and please bare in mind I don't have any modelling skills whatsoever) I took two Tyco Curvehugger chassis' (quite ironic really, using them to go in a straight line ;D) Removed front wheels, pickups and pickup springs from one and cut off the pointed bit of the guide, leaving the clip bit to hold the front on. I then removed all the rear end of the second chassis and trimmed the chassis until there was little more than the front end and a flap to use to fasten the extension to. I then needed to find something to use for the chassis, and as I wanted to use what I had available, i searched the house and found an old DVD case which I cut too fit three pieces and glued them together for strength, then glued them onto the two parts of the chassis. Next job was to attach the wires and try it out...it goes. I need different rear rims and tyres but that's a little job for the future, I want to get the cosmetics done first. The hard part is yet to come getting a body to fit and making/fastening the rear wing. All this and someone will say I'm way out with the dimensions ;D

Go to nhra.com and look at the rules for the length, then devide by 64

All this and someone will say I'm way out with the dimensions ;D According to this link: www.nhraonline.com/anatomy/topfuel.htm*usually wheelbase run between 285" to 300" Doing the math that works out to 4.453125" to 4.6875" at 1/64 scale. At 5.5", as a 1:1 it would be 352" or 4'4" longer than *usual. *('usually' is quoted directly from the web site, on this site it does not state it as a rule) Reading further down under Specifications on the same link as above it states: " . . . may not have a wheelbase that measures more than 300 inches or fewer than 180 inches."

Now I've reduced the length to 4.5 inches, it is now 1/64 scale of an original ;D However I've also found out that the original Aurora Dragsters ranged in length from 4.75 to 5.5 inches, making them well out of scale...unless full sized ones were bigger when they were made I managed to make a body and fit it with velcro. Just needs a coat of paint and some decals and a wing. once that is done I'll need to get a new arm for it and strip the can motor down and fit a quicker arm ;D Then I can build a track to test it properly ;D ;D ;D

Very cool project I hope you will post pics as you progress Here's the latest pics of the project...painting, not a strong point of mine First up the engine taken one of these which I bought for next to nothing off ebay Then I painted the engine and wheels which moved with the force of the spray so I stuck them to double sided tape while I sprayed one side Then the body, which isn't going to plan as it was supposed to be bronze and black but the black didn't work out and the bronze is more like gold. Next up a quick mock up to see how the engine fits Next on the project is to get hold of some suitable wire to attach the rear wing and to find a driver. Watch this space...

I like the look of the engine but the body really doesn't do the project any favours... I've mounted the engine and front wing with velcro, that way I can easily service the motor by removing the engine and the front wing will simply come off if I fail to stop before the end of the track and end up in the wall ;D
