I got a couple of old AFX 4 gear chassis to try. Pulled the AW magnets out and stuck them in the AFX chassis and the height is way off. Do I need to shim these, different magnets, what gives?

Yep, the old Aurora/AFX chassis is deeper/ taller than AW chassis and magnets. When I built my Doorslammer car, I just tried to be sure the height of the magnets was centered to the arm, and used one layer of electrical tape on the back of the mags to shim them, and make them tighter so they don't 'move' when the car is running. I did have to do a VERY minor amount of sanding to the mags where they actually lock in to the chassis at the ends of the magnet to fit snug. Don't over do it (it's VERY easy to sand off TOO much!). I still wanted them snug, but not to the point where it 'bent' the chassis if I forced them in too hard. So sand and fit, sand and fit, etc., etc.,...lol..you get my point. Hope this helps. One thing to keep in mind tho, if you're gonna use this setup in an NFC car as currently running in the NTRA 'proxy' racing, I'm not too sure, but I don't think shimming the mags is legal. That would need to be checked in the rules just to be sure. If it's not, the snug fit can be accomplished by just sanding the ends like I said in the prior post. Ron (Bondo)

Ron (Bondo) Looking at the current rules, there is no notation regarding magnets.
