Been having problems with screw from bottem of chassis to top plate. Screw thightens up, but gears(crown to drive) are slippin bad. Been trying body screws, maybe need a different screw. Seems to bottem out in plate. Tried drilling out plate hole in one, but still has gear problem. Don't want to get to crazy with remidy, want to be able to remove plate for oiling gears without to much trouble. Need help here, bodies on way from left coast. I'd like to have two rolling 4-gears before they get here. ...............thanks in advance guys I'm stuck! PC

PC, first thing, that screw is different than a mounting screw. You can file down a mounting screw for this though.
The correct hold down screw for an Aurora 4 gear chassis has a flat tip. No point on the screw so you can see it's clearly shorter. Maybe a 16th or two? I would ude a toothpick and measure where the top plate hole bottom out and trim a screw to fit.
Now with the skipping gear, usually once they skip once thats it. It's shot so time for a new crown gear. The standard 4 gear crown gear is not good. I use AFX 15 tooth and shim it a little to kee it in place. Works better than the original and no where near as fragile. Get it set and forget it.
Hope this helps PC

shim the crown gear towards the pinion.
If the original screw tightens up ok, then it's not the cause.

Thanks guys - Never had original screw, building from NOS parts. Shortening screw sounds easier than drilling out hole and worrying about cluster gears. Just have to change crowns now(Joe), should be up and running then. ..........thanks again! PC

Ok, first you need to do the 15t conversion, then you need to "stake" the rivet on the cluster gear at your discretion, it will remove some play. You can drill the hole up further ( I do this mod on every 4gear chassis ) using caution not to go through the other side. You can oil the crown gear by inserting your oiler through the opening next to the cluster gear, once I'm together, I rarely, if ever open it up.
