I don"t know why not. If I remember right there was one back in the late 60's/early 70's. It'd be a neat change from all the Cuda's and Camaro's. Heck I did a bunch of work on a "Monza" to make it look like an Omni. I'm still trying to figure out how to make an Escort out of the other one I have.

There were actually several versions of a 1 to 1 Jeep FC that was run, all built by the same people or builders, and I'm pretty sure the same guy drove them all. I could be wrong on that tho. One was named "Holy Toledo". One other one was named "Secret Weapon". Somewhere in this puter I have the pics of all of them. I was actually working on building one to cast, then I found out that Hairy Canary was doing one so I gave up on the idea. I do cast a stock wheelbase '42 Jeep body that will fit a Tjet, but that's another story. If I can find the link to the story and pics I have of the Funny Cars, I'll post it here for ya. You can probly find it yourself too by searching the net. I personally think it would be allowed, but since I ain't an 'official, I really couldn't tell ya..lol. ;D Don't know why it wouldn't be allowed tho. Ron (Bondo) Ron

OK..here's one link. The pics in this aren't showing up on this end tho. Not sure if it's because of the 'age' of the story or if it's something on my end. I think it's because it's an old story myself. Anyway, here's that link, pretty good reading, even without the pics. www.draglist.com/stories/SOD-Jan-2003/SOD-010703.htm And, here's another. There is one good pic of the "Secret Weapon" Jeep, but you can find more pics by searching "Secret Weapon Jeep Funny Car", or by searching "Holy Toledo Jeep Funny Car". Here's that link: www.60sfunnycars.com/round6.htm This one has the "Holy Toledo" Jeep FC in it. Scroll down the page, you'll find it. www.70sfunnycars.com/FunnyCars29.html Have fun! ;D Ron (Bondo)

Under the present NF/C rules would the Hairy Canary's Jeep funny car a legal body for this class? Thanks in advance ;D Sticklers may want to get on you for the front and rear window rule. Some may say it should run as an Altered. But,the overall funny car appearance is present and is representative of an actual 1:1 funny car. I say why not. Looks like they them run at Lions'. The Jeep funny cars all were one of a kind. Roger Wolford’s "Secret Weapon" Jeep was hit or miss when it came to performance. It either beat all the other racers, broke, or had handling problems. Wolford’s fortunes varied with the stretched Jeep, but there was never a dull moment with this car. Roger drove the car to a known best of 8.03 with a 392 Chrysler Hemi/Torqueflite combination. Rules eventually outlawed the Jeeps from sanctioned drag racing meets, but they could be seen at open races and match races until the turn of the decade. Wolford went on to fight the "Corvette Curse" with the "Mako Shark.”Above quoted from 60sFunnyCars.com

Been away for awhile. The Jeeps were considered Funny Cars until NHRA banned them in 67 but they still ran the Match Race circuit. That's when cars had names and gimmicks instead of sponsors. That shot of the Holey Toledo Jeep was the recreated car that Lenarth built a couple of years ago and ran it at a few west coast races. That shot was at Bakersfield. Ed Lenarth passed away in April of 2011. Here are a couple of shots I took in 1967 with my instamatic I was 10 at the time. Ed Lenarth and Roger Wolford's The Secret Weapon was at Lions it was considered Army and I think Gene Conway's Destroyer was taken at Irwindale it was Navy. Hard to remember it was a few years ago. And a different angle of the Secret Weapon wheel stand at Lions. That's my Dad in the other lane. You can only see a small piece of the rear bumper in the other picture. Rick

I was a frequent visitor to Lions, Irwindale, and OCIR (RIP to all three) back in the day, and have vivid memories of the variety of Jeeps that raced in Funny Car. As I recall, Conway's Destroyer and the Secret Weapon were the best of the bunch, and they beat the full-bodied Funny Cars regularly -- until the Jeeps were banned for having an "unfair advantage" (with the aerodynamics of a shoe box!).
How cool is it that they're using a Jeep panel wagon for the tow car, too!
Great, great pictures, Rick. Very cool that you've kept them over the years. Instamatic -- didn't that use something called film, that you dropped off at the drugstore and got prints back a week later?
Thanks, Rick V.
