Anybody out there have some fun doing rewinds? I am going to give it try. I use to do 1/24th scale motors years ago for drag racing. Thought I might do a few for fun.

"Fun" is an interesting word when it comes to rewinds!
You gotta include letting the smoke out of several armatures in that term, collapsed springs, melted chassis, as well as breaking comm tabs etc
All worth it when ya get a running motor, and makes ya really appreciate the skills of the commercial guys!
Make sure you have hi temp wire (180 degrees C +), good lighting and magnifying lens. And a good supply of blank armatures...

;D ;D yea I have done all that to, and your right it is all worth it when you dial in on a few winds the really scream ;D I have some ML wire and few blanks. I was thinking not so much inline as pancake. Let the fun begin ;D

Eagle, Just wanted to wish you luck with windings. My re-winding days are over, eyes don't cut it anymore. Can be frustrating, but worth it. Last one I did melted brush pockets (been told 30g is going to far for pancake). But gotta say, I still get a kick outta that one as much as I do the few that are still running. Good luck, PC

Just finished my first rewind in 15 years. I used a wire resistance calculator to figure the length of wire to gauge of wire used. After speaking with tjetsgrig on what the limits were for the 4gear chassis I started to wind. The wind according to the calculator was supposed to be 3.2 to 3.5. Must have had to many beers ;D it came out 2.9 ohms. Time for chassis mods to get this arm to hook up. I don't expect this arm to last long. I did not use a really good blank. I did not want to use a good one for the first arm since I had not done one in awhile. Well back to the track ;D

I got my new Fluke 113 meter, it is so nice to have good readings for a change. Just finished a 3.5 ohm motor zero degree timing 3 lam arm it is a very fast motor with cermaics have not run with polymers. Kind of pressed the bushing on the shaft to far and bowed the com it is still fast. Have to watch out for that, ya learn by doing it. I won't do that again I hope.

tjetsgrig, LOL, haven't on the pancake stuff but nothing real radical. Now inlines all the time, blow the com plates off those. Years ago I use to be able to buy no blow coms for HO arms from Mura and blanks. Wish I had bought a bunch of those. Oh, tjet those arms you wound for me sure are sweet. My arms aren't as pretty as yours, but I am having fun.

yeah I've only had a couple of successful inline winds, had to pillage some better quality Aurora G+ comms to make them work.. A 37 wind in a Tomy Turbo can is a sweet thing

Well tjetsgrigs I finally let the smoke out of a pancake. The tri lam pics I posted under Blacktop Raceway, that motor is no more. It looks like no problem with windings. The problem appears to be to soft of a brush The brush material built up between air gap on comm plates and melted the comm on both sides. It curled up Fast motor for about 5 passes. Think I will try stock factory brush they are harder material than what I used.

Wondering if the brushes were the problem with stock arm that smoked. Had burn marks between comm. plates. Have to look at arm again. Were stock brushes, maybe bad lot was used by AW.
