Mac I use VRP com set for pancakes. I have a com lathe for inlines as well as a Taig bench top lathe. The VRP is like $18 I like it a lot.

A well known common one for doing new gears is tooth paste. Apply some toothpaste to the crown and pinion gears, lift the rear wheels up on a powered run-in block or section of track and let the car free-wheel with the DC power supply set at about 4 - 6 volts. Do this for about an hour. I always keep the pinion/crown gears together once it's run in this way. Once this is done, clean off the toothpaste and oil the gears with a drop of synthetic engine oil (something like Mobil One) and you're ready. For doing coms, this might sound cheap, but hey - it works ! Mount the armature on a chuck of a power drill, wrap a strip of 1500 or 1800 grit of black wet/dry automotive sand paper around a small flat file and true the com by placing light pressure on the com with the drill set at medium speed, just don't place too much pressure or set the drill's speed too-high to prevent damage. A drop of thin grade oil for sewing machines during cutting is also a good idea. I've done coms for inline armatures for HO, 1/32 and 1/24 slot as well as 1/10 R/C cars this way for over 30 years and it has always worked for me.
