I have purchased about 20 aw 4 gear cars over the last 6 months and every now and then I get one that runs pretty good. The rest are pitiful. I loosen the screw on the bottom about a half turn, push the bottom tabs toward the armature to increase brush contact and add shunt wires. Doesn't seem to help the slow ones. Any ideas? I have 2 decent runners and the rest have become parts cars. I realize they are $20 toy cars with no precision parts and probably little quality control but Im hoping someone can point me in the right direction to making them all run better. I feel the same way. I have found increasing brush contact by pushing up the tabs to hurt more then help. The top plate has been the route of most my problems like all the slop in the gears. Loosening the screw on the bottom and putting a spacer between the top plate and chassis (I use a peace of scrap metal cut down to fit) placed before the rear magnet to help sometimes. Don't know if this is ok with the rules but just wanted to share some things that have worked for me in the past. Also I have my fare share of cars that are only good for parts.

By adding a shim between the top plate and chassis,,Is that changing the pressure on the crown gear? I wander if that is why some seem so tight and others dont? Before I started using shunt wires I would stretch the springs under the pick up shoes. That seemed to help a little.

you nailed it with being toy cars, quality control and not having precision parts. With all of the possibilities each car could have a different issue. Taking apart the car spinning all the rotational parts seperate might help determine the problem on each. Off topic here but the single best improvement for the AW 4 Gear cars straight out of the box is to solder braids to the pick up shoes. nitroslots.com/thread/1999/make-braided-pick-shoes

I'm still new to this but from what I've seen of the JL and AW cars, 4 gear and Xtraction is that they leave a lot to be desired. Quality is poor compared to the earlier Aurora version but then again the new ones are made in China like everything else these days. Your best bet is take all of your parts and see which ones work together best. Manufacturing tolerances on these cars vary greatly and finding the chassis an gear plate that line up best is a start. Then using a polishing compound on the gears so they mesh correctly. Drag on the rotating components robs you of what little horsepower these cars make to start with.

Flat needle file will also work, I use one after putting on braids to clean up slot in shoe.
