Having a need for some silly foam tires and not wanting to take my chances on ordering some and not fitting I decided to try my hand in making my own. Lots of information out there on how to do it. I ran into a little difficulty in locating the foam. As I was cruising through Hobby Lobby I stumbled on large sheets of foam in the crafts department. Three different sizes of 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm. The sheets are 12"x 18" in size. They also come in a rainbow of colors including black! Thought I would purchase some as they were on sale at 40% off! Most expensive size was the 5mm at a $1.27! Granted it may not be the thickness I needed but i figured if I stacked them together to acheive a close size I could trim from there. Here are a couple of shots of the out come! Oh - they work great! These are my first attempt samples which are a little sloppy however as I did a few more they got much better. Nice way to get the size you want! Alan @ Maple Groove Drag Strip.

Looks like a GREAT idea! Now, gotta get some laps on them to see how well they hold up. Ron (Bondo)

When you stacked them, did you just put them together and let the outer silicone coat hold them, or did you glue them then coat?

How did you cut the holes for the rims??

Stacking the foam: I first coated the rim with glue and place the first piece of foam on the rim. when doig this there was a little bit of glue that came out around the rim. I then placed the second piece of foam on the rim and that little bead of glue spread out against the face of the second piece. Everything looked nice and flush so I let it dry overnight. From there I shaped the tire itself and started the coating process. So far so good. I made a few passes and was impressed with the times in relationship to the slip on silicones I was using. We shall see how they hold up. I do not think the tires that require 2 pieces laminated together will be an issue as the coating process makes a very nice one piece tire when done.
For cutting the holes I used a piece of aluminum tubing with the end turned down to a very sharp edge. Holding the tube vertical and with a slight downward pressure and twisting you can cut a very clean hole. The little piece of foam remains in the tube. After about 4 or five holes you want to ream out the tube.
Time will teel how they hold up but itsure was fun, inexpensive and allows me to get the tire sizes I want to try out quickly.
