Saw something about the old 409 Chevy and yes I remember the song well also read something about the Plymouth Hemi with the aluminum front end.
There were actually car songs in those days. Now the garbage songs??, if you can call them songs, are about rape and murder.
Both cars bring back memories of my 55 Chevy. It had a 327 with worked Vette heads, headers, 11-1 pop ups, roller cam, 4 speed, headers, 5.14 rear. Yes I street drove that car, gas was cheap then. Ran low 13s, high 12s, very quick for it's day. Beat one of those Hemis with the aluminum front end at an 1/8th mile track. Mostly on a hole shot of .2 as he was coming up quick at the finish line. I was told the guy was so pissed off he took the hood off the car and flung it on the ground. Actually his driving stunk not the car. Me and a couple of buddies are driving around when we spot a Chevy with the 409 emblems. We stop and talk to the guy and ask if he wants to race. The guy is afraid of the car and does not want to race me. My buddy volunteers to drive it for him and he OKs that. I sure would not have let somebody I don't know drive my car. We line up and take off, traction is at a minimum with the small street tires of the day. I do a better job of getting off the line and get out front about a car. My buddy is doing a pretty good job for never being in the other car and he gets it hooked and we start to go. When I hit 3rd I got a little out of shape and he pulled within about 1/2 a car where we ran till we stopped. Some nostalgia from long ago. They are fun memories and I just wanted to share. My son still wishes he was around in those days.

I really feel lucky to have grown up at the time I did. I must have had 100s of stop light drags in my time + some organized street racing that we did back then. Lost my license one time for 3 months for street racing. Things were way different back then, now they want to take your car and put you in jail thanks to the media sensationalizing any street racing accident. 20,000 people are killed by drunk drivers every year vs maybe 3 or 4 by street racing. Which one do you hear most about! Not condoning street racing as it is safer on the track just pointing out that the news media stinks.

My first car was a 66 Chevy ll with a 400 small block my dad gave me for my birthday. It was hugger orange. The first car i bought was a 66 Chrysler imperial had a 440 in it with 53000 original miles car was mint condition one of my grandmas friends bought I new it had all service records and factory paint when I bought it it still had nylon tires lol it was a huge car but not had anything since that rode as good or drove that good plus it ran pretty good to be a yacht

My dislike is rice cars. Never could get one to race against my car, wonder why? Did have a friend who wanted to race me with his N20 Mustang. I ran strictly on motor and even the starter at the track thought the race was a laugh. It was a fun run and I should have given him at least 3 second spot on the tree but I did not think of it. Mustang ran low 8s in the 1/8th and the Beretta ran low 5s on motor. My friend said "I watched the taillights disappear into the darkness. He actually did the paint work on the car for me.

I street race mostly but have been trying to make my way toward the track, bad thing is to run anything worth talking about takes money and ALOT of it. I have somewhere between 30k in chassis alone another 10k motor wise and still need to add things due to my last inspection like a cage ( another 5k or so... ). You cant just go buy a car and take it directly to the strip like you use to, part of me wishes i was born so that i could drive and race in the 60s and 70s... but then again look around, you have V6 mustangs stock that push 300+hp... equal to that of a stock 327 of the day. The Hellcat, the SRT10, GT1000, 15' Copo Camaro at 820hp stock.... horsepower has gone up and up, cars are getting faster and faster on the other end of the spectrum prices and availability arnt what they were, a motor build today runs very high and there arnt as many people working on their own cars... but its Nostalgic for a reason and its that reason that it will be missed.
I dont in any way condone street racing, its illegal and dangerous. If you choose to do it, do it away from the public so that the only one you harm... is your irresponsible self.

Found this old post and it brought back some memories. Racing in days long gone was nothing like it is today. It has been some years now since I went down the track with a 1/1 car. Racing the small cars is all I do today. I must admit I still miss racing the big cars some and I don't regret doing what I did back then. Super expensive however and being retired now there is no way I could afford to run a car like the Beretta, (roughly 1000 a month in upkeep and racing expense), I had or even the 68 Camaro which had a big M steel block 632 in it. Still the memories are nice to think about.
