A magnet is a three dimensional geometric shape having length, height and width. The top and bottom are considered faces due to fact that they are flat no different than that of a cylinder/can of soup or a rectangular/tissue box. The round part of a cylinder isn't considered a face only the flat surfaces thus a cylinder has 2 faces: the top and the bottom. A rectangular box such as a tissue box has 6 and a sphere or ball 0. If the cylinder was cut in half and the middle hollowed out you'd have a shape similar to Afx pancake magnet. Only the flat parts are faces thus the top, bottom and the two inner flat surfaces facing the armature.
