Here is a "How to" for those that received one of these kits from the Blacktop event. Kit consist of : - 1 Washer - 1 Allen key - 1 screw
The intent is to remove some of the slop that has plagued the 4G chassis for decades. This kit will not remove all the slop but does make the cluster a little more solid when adding hotter armatures such as the "mean green" armature.
First you want to remove the stock rivet. I used a dremel to grind the rivet flush with the gear plate.
After grinding, push the rivet out.
from the top side simply take the screw and washer and screw into the opening. Only screw it down so that it is snug then back it off a half turn.

Install the top plate back into the chassis. Now it's time to make the final adjustment. By using a 9v battery or break in track let the motor run. Using your allen key adjust the screw until there is no drag, you'll notice by sound when you have found the sweet spot. One thing that I've noticed is that the you'll have some gear noise that you didn't have before. If you have some "Semi Chrome" lap in the gears until it smooth's out. You can also use toothpaste instead of semi chrome. After lapping in the gears, take the top plate and clean up it up with water and soap, also remove the cluster to clean it up underneath the washer. Oil the gears and pivots and re-install the top plate. Re-adjust using as described above.
Hopefully you have great results as I have. I've put 26 volts to these chassis with a mean green armature installed and have yet to have a gear to fail. I've also noticed they run more consistent.

Thanks, Sam I will be trying it soon. Where do the Allen screws come from that were used.
Probably should put this in the drag racing tips section.

I second that...thanks Sam. I've read about the screw cluster modification, but never tried it. Now I can. Kit is sitting on the desk waiting for the next 4 gear build. Might have to build one just so I can use it.

is there a place to purchase this kit ? Gibbo in the previous thread above your post the screw and washer dimensions are given. They can be found on Ebay for pennies. That is a quality upgrade to the stock cluster rivet setup on both the 4 gear and the 3 gear chassis. Screw 0-80 3/16" Washer M1.6 x 4mm x 0.3mm
