Well guys, the white Monte Carlo in my avatar went up in flames Wednesday. Looks like it originated with the battery. It was hooked up to a battery maintainer/charger. It's a miracle that the garage didn't burn down with it. Especially when you consider all of the flammable stuff I keep out there.

Thank you guys. The car is insured, so hopefully they'll take care of me. It was a nice car but I was not overly attached to it like some I've owned. Maybe because its pretty much as I bought it. Not as much sweat and blood in it, I guess.
Fixing it will be a Hugh project. Think I'll just let it go and move on to something new.
It was a miracle that the garage didn't burn down or blow up. There are enough flammables and explosives out there to take out the garage and house, plus the camper parked outside. Paint, thinner, kerosene, propane, all sort of aerosols, plus the Monte has a full tank. In spite of it all we are really thankful. The Lord was looking out for us. The garage is sealed up well. It looks like the smoke snuffed it out or it ran out of oxygen. A few things melted and lots of smoke and soot damage but not near as bad as it could have been.
We just added a 12x30 addition that will be a wood workshop and slot car race center. Fortunately we were not done painting, so none of that got moved in yet.
thanks, Bill

A higher being was definitely watching over you. Were you home at the time? That is why I do not use trickle chargers or battery maintainers when I store my cars. I just fill them with fuel and start them once a week letting them run for 15 minutes or so. Then I check the battery voltage with a meter to insure the battery is fully charged. Been doing this for 40 years and never had an issue. Now I'm showing my age. Any way glad to here you and yours are OK. I believe out of something bad always comes something good.

We don't know for certain when it happened. All was good at 9:30 pm when we went in for the nite. Next time the garage was opened was 6:00 pm the next nite. Fire was out, all was cooled off. This garage is detached from the house. Daily drivers were not in there. Another good thing is that the Monte was in the attached garage until the prior weekend. Glad this didn't happen in there!

Sorry to hear that Bill. I like those cars, glad it was not worse. Batteries can short internally and it may have overloaded the charger. I have had them take out alternators in the past as a cell shorts and overloads the charging circuit. Once I had a new battery 2 days old that did it.

Well, the Monte is gone. They picked it up Sunday night. At least the insurance company didn't try to put the screws to me. If anybody has a GM G-Body car, there will be a bunch of parts available soon.
It looks like the garage may get all new drywall, peg board, cabinets, paint and even epoxied floors. It'll be a good time to get rid of a bunch of unnecessary stuff and get everything clean and organized. Then the challenge will be trying to keep it that way.

I'm just catching up on stuff here. Sorry to hear about the mishap, but I'm glad the insurance company treated you alright. You won't have a problem getting rid of those parts, there's lots of people working on those cars.
