Prior to today, the only casting I had done was making pen blanks where I made my molds out of HDPE. I had asked if anyone here was doing any casting but decided to give it a go myself.Since it looked like rain this morning I cancelled my garage roof work plans and went to Hobby Lobby with coupon in hand and picked up a basic casting kit.. They aren't perfect but for my first pour like this, I am happy!!!! Definitely going to try other rubber for molds. This one seems awfully soft.

I was going to suggest using either some Milliput which is like a two part epoxy or Silly Putty for some simple molds also. Perfect for accessories like your grill and bumpers. The mold material I am using is a Smooth On product and takes 24hrs to cure. So a two part mold will take two days before I can cast anything. Yours look like they came out great. Congrats on your first cast!

Discovered the putty after I bought the kit. I am definitely going to get some though especially since the putty can travel with ya!!!

Cozee..couple tips. Like Jeff said, check out Smooth On. Their stuff is the best, for both the molding and the casting. Also, if your going to get stuff from Hobby Lobby, be sure the rubber for the molds is the High Strength 3. More durable, more flexible, and the mold lasts a LOT longer (you can also get the same type of rubber from Smooth On, or anywhere else that sells it, just be sure it says HS3 or is comparable). You would have to buy that individually, as what's in the kits is much harder and not as flexible, which makes it harder to get the castings out, also the mold would be more brittle and will break in pieces (I've had it happen). Also, on the resin, look over by the stained glass stuff in the crafts side of Hobby Lobby, look for "Amazing Casting Resin". It works a lot better than what they put in those kits, and it dries in white (they make clear too, but that always leaves air bubbles). As I stated, Alumilite (the company that makes what Hobby Lobby sells)is nowhere near as good as Smooth On, but definitely great for starting out! Also, there's some how to's on Alumilite dot com too. I was doing a LOT of casting a few years ago, and am slowly getting back to it, time permitting. Sam gave me tips when I was starting out, so I learned from one of the best.
