Well they came. When 'wouldn't it be neat if' became "let's have a GASSER Drag Race," We werent sure anyone would care.
They came and they Raced and now the GASSER NATIONALS are
part of our brief history. You guys have followed the brief but exciting ride from that first proposal to this post race analysis.
Thirty Seven Cars were on the Start Line area on April 12. I guess that answered the question as to "who would come?"
PSD Racing facility is quiet now, til the next regular meet for the locals. I'd kinda like a pic of the empty track as a souvenir.
Memories?? Yeah, I have some:
* How about the number 19 qualifier taking the top prize??
*Walt Pierce's Rust Gasser.
*Slugger Canady getting the red light express.
*A prize winner donating his prize to another entrant?
* The winner of the "Golden Shaft award (best car losing to a red light) trying to refuse his prize as he says "hey red lights are part of drag racing." (yeah, YOU Slugger)
*The smack talk.
*The "tech tips" offered to competitors.
*Phil's Wing.
* Mtyoder's (read his name out loud) NASH Gasser!
*The CRASH
*The First almost live coverage of an HO drag race by our very own CHIMA!
* The first known use of instant replay to decide an HO drag
race!!
*Best appearing car judging being so close we had to pick 1st 2nd and 3rd.
* My favorite; the starting grid photo of nearly 40 Gasser entries.
To say we are pleased would be an understatement. It is the Racers who deserve the kudos. You guys made this event what it was, you guys put down your money and time; really getting into the spirit of the event. No one whining questions of 'why do the cars need such and such an appearance and why do they have to be such and such a year?" We devised those rules thinking it would add to the fun instead of detract. You guys voted a resounding 'yes' with your interest and entries. Not a rule violation in the bunch!
I think part of the fun, for me at least, was the appearance of the cars themsleves. It had the look of a real drag meet I would have liked to have attended, say in 1967. Willys dominated the field. I expect that trend to diminish as guys branch out and discover other Gasser protoypes. There were available Body styles we didnt see.
The only negative I can think of...........I didnt want it to end'. Drag races do come to an end , however, thats what they are all about. The best ones leave you and that 'burned rubber urge' satisified, yet wanting another fix. That's me today.
The SUPERSTOCK NATIONALS are on the calendar. We will do everything we can to make it an event equal to and better than the GASSER NATIONALS. we learned a lot from this one event, and will put into practice that information. we look for a bigger field, and more and bigger prizes, more friendly smack talk, more 'free' advice, and more upsets. Never forget the most important aspect of this............more friendship and FUN!
One of my favorite moments at the end of every Olympic Games, is when the president, at the extinguishment of the torch, calls upon 'the youth of the world" to meet again in four years. We dont have to wait that long and maybe we arent the Olympic Games, but we know a good time when we see one!
See you guys in St Louis!!
