Welcome on the forum wdmnerc, HO slot cars can be in three wheelbases with the original Tjet. You just move the front axle to the right hole. The hole that's higher was/is used for big wheeled trucks and is rarely used for drag racing. Maybe monster trucks, but we haven't been doing any of that. There were some plastic or hard body funny cars sold new many years ago that are floating around on the Internet. Be careful what you buy on the Internet when you are new as there are many unscrupulous sellers who will say "rare", "original" and other adjectives that are bending the truth to get a sucker to pay too much. Maybe find someone that you trust who knows the ropes before you get taken by some of the bad guys. (There are a lot of good guys too. The Mead Bros. that are listed on here are two of them.) Back to F/C wheelbases. Besides the hard body F/C that are available used, there are lexan bodies available from some of the different suppliers. Take a look at some of the different HO drag race websites for a bit before you jump in would be my thought. Psychoslots.com has a lot of information right here along with hodragraceregistry.com which lists a few. It also lists sanctions which also list suppliers. T.S.S. Hobbies has jumped on as a sponsor for the first mail a way race for HO drag racing but there are many more. As far as getting your track going, Sam gave you good info with buying a Semi-Pro timing system. Just make sure that you can get the right DOS version computer to run it. Daniel at Trackmate also sells a windows version that's fantastic but it's much pricier. What State are you located in? There may be a way to help get you going with others in the area. My first track was snap together with the Semi-pro timing system and it wasn't long till I knew I had to have a serious routed track. Be careful...this stuff is fun and will be addicting! Keep asking questions. We don't mind and it's what psychoslots.com is all about. Helping promote the HO drag racing hobby. Glad you joined.

"What is the scale wheelbase of a funnycar?"
Good question but a pretty tough one to answer, at least in my opinion.
The Aurora AFX funny cars like the Vega van gasser had an extended wheelbase with the front wheels mounted to a provision cast into the body, rather than using the holes in the chassis. The funny cars that Troy and I do for the TJET chassis also have the front wheels mounted in front of the chassis in order to achieve the longer/stretched funny car wheelbase look.
When considering scale funny car wheelbase on the hard bodies, I am not sure there can be a specific set standard. That is, I don't think it is as simple as converting a 1320 drag strip to H.O. scale 1/4 mile and ending up with an exact number of "X" feet "x" inches.
You are sort of limited by 1) the chassis---front wheels must be far enough forward to clear the pickup shoes to insure that the pickups will work properly
and 2) the body being used---just sort of have to proportion the length of the stretch for the funny car wheelbase to the rest of the body and width of the body so you end up with the right look for a flopper. I think for each body used you need to try to proportion the length of the front fenders with the rest of the body(including width) so that you get the "right" overall look for a funny car.
There is bunch of variation in "H.O." scale bodies-- look at a TJET AC Cobra or 63 vette compared to a TJET Mack stake truck-- the TJET cobra and vette are much larger in relation to the Mack truck compared to the 1:1 versions of each vehicle, but that is just a result of building multiple bodies to fit one chassis platform....couldn't really build the Mack truck to scale in relation to the cars and still use the same chassis.
If you are converting standard bodies to Funny Cars you may just need to proportion each funny car in relation to the original body you started with...you should still end up with a variety of Funny Car bodies that are very close in wheelbase but maybe not exactly the same wheelbase, as is the case with all long wheelbase tjet bodies, and all short wheel base tjet bodies with the exact same (respective) wheelbase at the expense of some of the body proportions.
Hanging the front wheels independent from the chassis for the flopper bodies gives you more options than trying to make the proportions of the car look "right" while still being constrained to a wheelbase determined by the holes in the chassis. Hope this makes some sense and helps you out.
Just as a followup to allstar's post....great advice on checking around on other drag racing websites, as some sanctioning bodies may have "set limits" on how long the bodies can be from the farthest forward and back points of the body. If you are planning on building to race with specific groups you will want to see if there are set body length limits so you don't build a really sweet car and have it come out a 1/16 or an 1/8 of an inch too long. When that happens you have another donor for the dammit pile. ;D

Just finished reading John's post about the length of H.O. scale dragstrips....in that post he does an excellent job of explaining the issues of scale when using a common chassis platform. That is exactly the point I was trying to make in my earlier post about the difficulties in defining the scale funny car wheelbase but I didn't nail it down nearly as well as John did here: www.psychoslots.com/index.cgi?board=ps4&action=display&thread=427
