With a few inexpensive options to setup a drag racing program/group. Such as either the the Autoworld Drag Strip or the Slot Dragon timing system. Have those options helped to bring in more racers? Just curious...

I think I over looked your post while I was so interested in our current event. anyway. what ever track you choose is great to get started. understand that most of the "HO" tracks are very narrow and the cars are very close together which is why guys later gravitate to professional track (spelled "expensive") or routing their own.
Slot Dragon is a very good system and a great price. I have had several before I got an expensive Track Mate.
you can easily combine an AW track with the Slot Dragon .... Slot Dragon even sells AW track already modified for the sensors too. I like Tomy brand AFX track (compatible to AW) 15" straights. just my preference.
there have been some Race Masters that ran proxy events with just an AW track that has the electronic starting tree and the finish line. the most important result being who crossed first without red lighting.
if you are just going to try to develop a local interest, I would say get an AW set. maybe add some extra straights and see how much interest you can generate before investing in a timing system.
with the current virus situation, you might be well advised to wait until after that has cleared so folks can come and enjoy racing. when the time is right, reach out to youth groups and local schools to see if you can generate some interest by young people.
in any case, keep us informed of what you are doing and share pictures if you can. also, consider getting involved in the proxy racing that is so popular here.. look forward to how you proceed. .

Just curious... I would think the that it has helped spark interest in 1/64 slot car drag racing. But it's hard to say if it's brought more racers to the forum or not. I've been here since 2011 and it seems to me that the majority of the new forum members are more veterans in the hobby. Although there have been a few new racers over the years. That's not saying anybody was a veteran of proxy drag racing....just the hobby in general. Whether it be other scales, customizing, road racing, or whatever. Most here seem to have had some previous experience. There's no data to support that theory. It's more my observation.

I agree with all that Al said, I started with a Slot Dragon setup and it works well. I was also able to get good tech support from them, unlike Track mate.

Guys, Thanks for the responses. I was just interested to see if those options helped grow this section of the hobby. Just to give you a little background on me. I started drag racing HO cars in 1989. It was a big challenge back then coming up with a timing system. But a gentleman named John Peckam sent a schematic that we could use. With that, my brother in-law and I cobbled a system together. It had most of what we needed except a tree that we could switch from pro to sportsman (it ended up being a sportsman tree) and no reaction times. Anyway about that time there was a little blurb in Drag Racing magazine on Bret Kepner. He and a bunch of IHRA racers running HO drags during the winter months. Which was awesome to see someone else was out there doing something like this. From there I kept moving forward and found a few racers around the country. Heard about a group in New Jersey that raced at E-town in the summer and HO in the winter. Never was able to track them down. Started doing my own bodies, came across HODRA, which lead to DRHOE… just a great ride. The only problem was finding racers. While we had a big group running on local road courses there was little interest in drag racing. By then a had a nice setup with a 30’ foot long Max and a full Trackmate timing system. Eventually I just put it aside and concentrated on road and oval racing. So that's it plain and simple.

Sounds like you have just the background needed to join in the fun.
