Oh, a rat rod can have paint. It just shouldn't shine and probably has rust in more places than not. Primer showing because of too many years of waxing or not waxing fits too. But no matter what... it's gotta have the "cool" factor.

My favorite "rat rods"............you guys might not even call a rat rod.............or certainly you might think my tastes rather mild.
The best, to my mind, are just simple hot rods that look like a guy could build it in his garage or in the backyard. Paint is simple. Plain Red, or green or grey, fading helps. A low gloss, dulled from natural weathering, or suede finish. Faded red thats turning pinkish is always good. Very Little or no chrome, with a wash of rust. Welds are just ok, safe but not buffed and polished perfect. The speed equipment should be simple, say three carbs and a once chrome aircleaner, a straight front axle, poainted in body color of course. Blanket upholstery is always in fashion. Some guys go all out to make them truly 'ratty' and nasty. I like the natural aged and weathered look. It must by all means be a HOT ROD though. Say a 1932 Duece or a "T." Pickups work too. They can get pretty funky, in fact very funky, but I prefer that whatever degree of 'aging' looks natural, not like a deliberate attempt at 'rustifying'. Some homemade or "yankee ingenuity" modifications or repairs add to the flavor as well. A fender almosssssssssssst rusting through is a plus as well! Faded lettering helps! Something like "Fred's Speed Shop" is good. Color mismatched parts like doors or fenders add to the stew. Having said that, I have seen a few 'over the top" rat rods (or should I say rag rods?) that were cool too.
All in all, a Rat Rod well done, will take the viewer back to a simpler and more innocent time of Hot Rodding, before helmet laws for bikers, and to a time when a 'sponsorship' was "Bill's Texaco," or "Murphy's Muffler Shop," and the support the sponsors offered was a free set of sparkplugs or a case of oil, or just a rack to put the car on in the wee hours of the morning.

"rat rod" Just a name to identify something built today to resemble what was done when the "boys" come back from WWII. They wanted to be wild and free after being in the war. The common engine in DADS 32 ford wasn't good enough anymore, the car had been sitting in the garage since before they left.. ingenuity was at a new level due to having to improvise parts in the European theater. Hotrodding was born, in backyards, gas station shops, old barns. Glitz and glamour, ok "bling" wasn't important, but building it "their way" was. I do appreciate the modern day "hotrod" with all the new paint and hand layed panels.. but to see a group of kids gathering around a homebuilt vintage tin Hotrod, really puts a smile on my face. "Ratrod" just a new name for a new generation of good old yankee ingenuity backyard built "HOTROD" Check out the H.A.M.B message board. (hokey assed message board) yes seriously that is what the initials stand for.. just my 02 cents.. Later Chris

Well said, Chris. I can stand in awe of a Boyd Coodington or Chip Foose piece, but give me a simple hot rod, built at home with sweat and busted knuckles and few dollars and I am a happy camper. yes I recommend HAMB as well.

Very nice chopp on the roof, I love the Dash Hot Rod as a project car, there is a ton of cool stuff a guy can do with that car. Here is an idea for you along those same lines. This is a Hot Rod with a Willy's roof grafted on, this is an easy project given you have a couple of trashed donor bodies. The paint not so easy, but would make a nice Rat Rod with some seude paint and rust added.
