The 4GU stayed home last time due to fireworks under the hood. Arm sparking to bottom of aluminum gear plate. It doesn’t seem to have lost its smoke. Any good ideas on how to insulate the wire without shorting windings together?

I don't know exactly what your trying to do Bill. I have some insulation varnish I use on my arms when I wind them. I could send you a little sample bottle.

Sounds like something isn't right for it to be doing that. The wire should be insulated otherwise it would short against itself. Sam has about the only idea I could think of. I would be interested to know how this turns out.

It looks like the wire windings had rubbed against the bottom of the plate and scraped off some of the insulation. They are not in contact with the plate now but sparks are jumping from windings to the plate. Hoping to coat the windings to insulate them again.
Sam, the stuff you mentioned sounds perfect. All I have is lacquer paint which could possibly make things worse.

All I have is lacquer paint which could possibly make things worse. That makes sense. I found that the geometry seems to be a little off on these top plates. Meaning there is a lot of space between the comm and the brush pockets. I had to shim the crap out of the motor to get it to ride as low as possible, keep it out of the top plate, and down on the brushes. I am also using the tallest brushes I can find (Tdash). I also had to raise the top plate by shimming it to get a good mesh with the crown gear which works against trying to get the motor lower (tips courtesy of Swiftkart in a post last year). Your issue with the motor coming in contact with the top plate is another one that we normally don't have to deal with. But.......I am not complaining at all since we are using these for an Unlimited Class which presents us with issues that are not normal. I hope you can get it worked out Bill. I finally got mine figured out yesterday and have something I can work with and tune now.

I've ran into the same thing and fount the screws that hold the brass plate to the aluminum plate stick out the bottom a little so i make sure to flush things up. I also shim the motor like JJ mentioned. You could use either apoxy or the 5sec uv glue to coat your wire i use uv resan

I also had to shim the armature.030 when I used the alumunum top plate as it was hitting the armature. I took the aluminum plate off the T jet unlimited chassis I had it on and the car not only ran better, + 8 mph, but it stopped the armature from rubbing on the top plate.

I to had problems with the arm rubbing on my Head Hunter 4GU. I had other issues too. First I used a non-magnatration chassis which was my first mistake but by the time I realized what was happening I had to much time invested so I did what I could to get it to work. My issues was different because I didn’t have the room to shimm the arm down because I didn’t have enough room for the brushes because the Non-mag chassis isn’t as deep as the mag chassis. So I was fighting it on both ends. I ground as much as I could on the bottom side of the plate for the arm to clear and ended up using brush cups to lower the brushes and springs for bottom clearance. I used Wiz .500 tall sillyfoam tire that didn’t give me much room to drop the brush cups down. It was on the verge of dragging. I also had to clearance the plate for the gears. Swiftkart’s tip on shimming the top plate would have been a easy fix for my setup but I was already to deep into my build and out of time. The aluminum top plate is the way to go but it’s by far not a bolt on deal. Next one I try is going to be different. I haven’t taken either of mine apart since Jeff’s last race or have touched a slot car since I need to get my butt in gear😁

Well it's been pretty quiet leading up to this race so far but raceday is coming fast! We are at the 1 month mark as of today. 3 weeks of tuning and 1 week of mail time. I hope everybody is putting the hot tune on their cars. Three classic NTRA Classes will be run and they are all highly competitive. That's why we like to run them at Bear Creek. I will be doing some car and track tuning in the next couple of weeks leading up to the race. Competition is going to be tough so don't hold back on the tuning. It's not too late to get Signed up. 2022 NTRA Winter Nationals starts March 24!
SEE YOU AT THE LINE!

Decided to send Jeff Wallaces super rendition of my old Chevy Beretta in for some stock class racing. It's running OK but will not set any records, still looks great, however. Been a shelf queen for some time now so it needs some racing action just like its old partner used to do. Might try to put the aluminum rear rims on it as they do look better. Beretta 1
Beretta 2
Beretta 3

That chassis meets stock rules? Looks more to be Comp 4-Go. Asking for a friend.
