Hey guys,
any tips on waking up the old AFX dragsters (magnatraction and non magna-traction)?
I only have the non-magnatraction chassis and replaced the old dried out foamies with silicone tires. I do have some magnatraction chassis inbound for them. They haven’t been run on the new silicone tires yet.
It’s kinda funny watching them struggle down the track with the worn out foamies (compared to the newer AW dragsters).
My LHS back in that era was more oriented towards trains, rockets and rc. So my hop up then was rubber cementing wheels to tires, pickup shoe adjustment and cleaning with an eraser. With no parental budget limitations based upon allowance, it’s time to go next level. lol
Thanks
Ken

Its kind of hard when you need a bunch stuff to try new things. Soak everything in vinegar overnight, then hit plates with a wire wheel. Some guys will glue neo dots or mega style neo for tractions. The OS3 motors of any ohm work well. He sells them balanced but pricey, unbalanced they are reasonable. Harden Creek has all the springs and pick-up shoes Wizzard, RT-HO, Jag Hobbies* a big sponsor here at Nitro, all have brushs springs gears wheels and tires I don't have any of the older AFX 4Gear cars, my cars are the AW 4Gear. Hobby lobby have them for 20 or I get the rollers from Jag. Jag Hobbies has just about everything you will need to update your pit box. Braid and shunt can be found on amazon under solder wick Braid for shoe size 3-3.5mm shunt wire search for soderwick from chemtronics size#1 Soak and clean in alcohol to remove flux coating

The old dragsters will fit the AW 4 gear chassis. The only issue is that the AW shoes are wider. The outside edge of the shoe next to the slot has to be trimmed thinner to clear the old bodies.

The local Hobby Lobby doesn’t get in the cool stuff I see other folks get at the ones they go to. The stock doesn’t rotate much at mine, and they seem to only get in the Looney Tunes and Import Heat cars. According to the manager, corporate dictates what they stock at each store.
I hit up the stores I do see traveling along with local hobby shops. Some stores call themselves hobby shops but seem to be focused on one core item only.
Thanks for posting up some suppliers I wasn’t familiar with.

I simply don't bother shopping at "brick and mortar" stores anymore. Gone are the days of the locally owned "hobby shop" so I don't feel bad not supporting small local businesses. The best slot car parts are small on-line businesses anyway. In addition to the list above, Slot Car Central has all kinds of vintage parts, too. They still have some NOS A/FX dragsters last I checked. Ebay for everything else.
