Some time ago, one of my AW dragsters lost a pickup shoe spring. Along the way, I purchased a 12 pack of springs. Today, I decided that I’d replace that lost spring and play around with getting the shoes to be flat on the track.
What a pain in the butt replacing that spring was! It ended up taking me almost an hour of fiddling around to get the spring to stay in place while getting the shoe back on. In that process, I ending up losing a couple more that went flying off into the room somewhere.
The AW chassis that I have have a shallow dish that the spring sits in, and the shoe comes over and keeps it in place. My one Jag DR-1 has a deep well that that holds the springs nicely. For me, the AW design is very difficult to work with.
Does anyone have any tips on how to assemble an AW pickup shoe and spring?
Thanks for listening to my rant…

Those springs are in orbit around the earth somewhere now... For the troublesome chassis I use a narrow slice off of a bondo spreader to hold the spring in place. The thin end holds it down while I hook the shoe and drop it into place. It also helps the have three hands. For some chassis I can just slide the shoe in from the side, get the hook set, and just lay the shoe down into position. Most time it works, sometimes not so much. The "launchables" take flight on a regular basis.

I use my small exacto knife to hold down the spring while I install the shoe.

"Springs go sproing!" Unlike T-Jets, I can't sneak the shoe hook under the hanger from the side on an AW 4G. I get the shoe hooked in and almost vertical, holding it up with one finger of the same hand that is holding the chassis. I drop the spring in place with fine pointed curved tweezers. Then the shoe goes down and hooks in with one quick smooth motion. Just got to go for it and not hesitate in the motion. I've launched lots of springs into orbit. I usually put on my strongest pair of reading glasses for this task.

Sometimes the tails on the back of the AW 4Gear and Xtraction shoes are too long, making them very difficult to install. Grinding or filing them a little helps a lot.
