I was reading some HOCOC rules and they say can or cant solder in the gears part. Do we call it something else in drag racing? Or what is it?

solder on the gears... HMM without reading the rules to understand the context. I'll take a shot... Back in the day after using the Tjet hop up kit and changing the rear gear to the 14t pinion, sometimes the top gear would slip.. quick fix usually was to get out the soldering iron and try to connect the shaft to the gear ,, usually resulting in melting hole in the gear plate and wrecking the whole thing. Now fast forward to today.. Someone figured out that knurling the pinion shaft with a pair of vicegrips and pressing the gear on back on works well causes no slip and of course due to the lack of heat ,,no melt down of the gear plate. So today, adding solder to the gears would only add wieght to the rear of the car.. (possbly unneccasary ballast). Balance of the rotating mass would also be totally screwed up. This theory makes little sense actually but only reason I can think of to allow or not , Solder on the gears.. I have one gear plate left from the solder days,, the only one that survived the process and countless moves from slot box to slot box.. Guess I keep it to remind me of the things we did to get by so we could race our cars... No we don't call it anything else in drag racing... we just try to stay away from turning our gear plates into molten blobs of nylon on the bench. Hope I am on the right track here... hope it helped.. Later Chris

Thanks Nightrider, I thought it was slang for something else, I didn't really think they meant solder. I'm a idiot....So much for Kim saying there isn't no such thing as a stupid question. Thanks again, iowajeff
