Update from Lions: Phyllis the Mail Lady delivered Hairycanary's transporter minutes ago. Better late than never, and entries for the NTRA World Finals are now officially closed.
No wonder it took time for Hairy's rig to get over the Grapevine -- this hauler is seriously overweight because it's packed with prizes for the NTRA Finals. He must have had to take the long way 'round to avoid the weigh station on I-5.
We're under a weather delay here at Lions, a light rain falling on the top end. We'll be ready for Stocker qualifying as soon as the track is dry. Meanwhile, be sure to visit the refreshment stand for the West Coast's finest Tofu Burgers, Soy Dogs, and Seaweek Shakes.

Qualifying Update: Darkness has descended at Lions Drag Strip, and despite the persistent efforts of the track crew, the unseasonable rain has washed out qualifying tonight. Sunday's forecast calls for sun and brisk temperatures, and records are sure to fall like autumn leaves under these conditions.
The Lions track management has issued rain coupons to the hardy fans who turned out tonight, and posted a new schedule that will compress qualifying and eliminations into a single day, with the special bonus Match Race of the Century between roounds. The race teams are making the best of it, bench racing and telling lies. So it will be race-till-you drop at the NTRA World Finals on Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. BE THERE!

By dawn's early light, the Lions Drag Strip crew was up early preparing for the condensed NTRA World Finals. As promised, the rain stopped last night, leaving a fresh track and cool, 65-degree temps. Conditions are ideal. Before qualifying begins and the race day crowd arrives, here's a behind-the-scenes look at Lions Drag Strip The racing surface is CNC-routed Sintra from TKO, with a 15' 7" track length in two 8' sections, and an additional 8 feet of shutdown with dynamic braking. Timing and scoring is by Trackmate, and a 30-volt/10-amp power supply provides the juice. The haulers started arriving last week. Early arrivals were parked in a holding area until the track opened this morning. The truckies spent the last week doing whatever it is that truckies do with a few days off. Local taverns have reported a sharp spike in beer consumption, however. The Lions pits are filled to capacity, with 15 entries in Stock, 20 in Gasser, and 14 in Nostalgia Funny Car, plus a pair of MM/PS cars for the Sam vs. Demon match race. Let's take a walk through the pits and take a closer look at the cars. Deciding on the Best Appearing trophies is going to be tough. And here's a sight that will bring tears of joy to a track manager: A pile of cash! Who says there isn't big money in small cars? The Stockers have been called to the staging lanes. The NTRA World Finals is underway. Racemaster Rick Race

Official Lions photographer Otto Focus was stationed at the pit entrance this morning as the teams began to arrive. Here is a selection of his stills. First through the gate was Nosubfor3's black-and-silver rig. Looks like he's got some assistance from RCR and the Flying Aces for the Finals. Wood's gorgeous red-white-and-blue Oldsmobile Stocker and his bad-in-black supercharged Torino Gasser are the envy of the Lions pits. Swamper and Tyler made the long haul from Florida. These guys are travelin' in style, with a converted school bus from Smokey Yunick's place in Daytona, the "Best d**n Garage in Town." Wonder if they've got any of the Smokey magic in those Chevy Gassers? We'll find out soon. Sam's a Mustang man through and through. While Chima drove the rig over the Continental Divide, Sam flew in on SKR Custom's P51 Mustang. The Lions management was a little annoyed when he landed on the drag strip. Demon is obviously well prepared for his match race with Sam's Mustang, arriving with a pair of Petty Blue D-100s. When asked about the contents of the tank, Demon explained it was just Energy Drink for Mopars. 440GTX and the Ohio Mafia arrived in force, with a transporter stuffed with Mopar Muscle. In addition to his familiar Dodge Father Funny Car, Matt's debuting Roger Lindamood's Color Me Gone '67 Charger. The rig was accompanied by Little Tony in his favorite black hearse. "Saves time with the paperwork," Lil Tony explained. Two of the standout entries in Nostalgia Funny Car arrived on tricked-out transporters. Hairycanary's stunning yellow Firebird out of Goodie's Speed Shop has got to be a contender for Best Appearing, while Scottman's Funny Rat Corvette takes a different approach. Who knew that a fiberglass body could rust? A pair of classic supercharged Chevy Gassers from SST1610 (a very sharp '55 Chevy) and Eddiebee (blown Stingray, probably no longer a candidate for restoration). Derwood made the long haul for Ohio with 440GTX, towing his supercharged Cuda with a color-coordinated D-100 Dodge. Bondoman had to call in a favor from a NASCAR team to get his Cam Am Nostalgia Funny Car to the Beach. Fordcowboy went with Ford power, bringing a sharp Boss Willys Gasser and a pair of well prepared Mustang Stockers. Finally, Demon and Richard had a little trouble on the tow from Florida when the truck expired outside of Little Rock. Fortunately they were able to flag down a couple of helpful farmers, and following the exchange of some Confederate currency, the boys were off to California. Demon got to ride with the pigs, and Richard rode with the sheep. At the request of the other racers, their rigs will be pitted down wind from the track. Thanks to Otto Focus for recording the arrivals at Lions! Racemaster Rick

NTRA Finals Stock Eliminator Qualifying Pos. Car No. Entry Best 1 3 Wood 442 1.391 2 24 440GTX Road Runner 1.400 3 8 440GTX Road Runner 1.401 4 28 Nosubfor3 Camaro 1.430 5 15 Bluegnuoy Nova 1.504 6 32 Derwood Challenger 1.550 7 16 Derwood Cuda 1.563 8 22 Ninjatek Chevelle 1.897 9 12 Nosubfor3 Chevelle 1.939 10 6 Ninjatek Chevelle 2.003 11 25 FordCowboy Mustang 2.294 12 7 Eddiebee GTX 2.296 13 23 Eddiebee Chevelle 2.598 14 9 FordCowboy Mustang No Time 15 1 Scottman AMX No Time
Every car made one run each in the left and right lanes. Most runs were within a few thousandths between the lanes. It's close at the top of the qualifying order, with four Mopars and three GM entries within .017 seconds!
Top Speed went to Wood's 442 at 8.64 mph in the left lane, followed by 440GTX's No. 24 Road Runner at 8.55 mph in the right lane.
Two cars had problems. Scottman's AMX was bouncing badly, and deslotted on numerous qualifying attempts. Ford Cowboy's No. 9 Mustang can't get the engine started. We'll get these cars back to the pits and see if repairs can be made before the start of eliminations.
Next up: Gasser qualifying.

scottman With only 15 cars I would guess that the #1 qualifer will get the by run first round. Rick would this be right or are you going to split the field?
