Welcome to Lions Drag Strip for Day Two of the NTRA Funny Car Manufacturers Championship. The field was set Saturday in a marathon qualifying session that determined the four manufacturer teams for the Funny Car championship and set the ladder for the Nostalgia Pro Stock eliminations that will take place later today.
We start off with Nostalgia Funny Car Open Competition. The seven-car field is made up of the entries that did not qualify for the Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, and Independent teams. But these guys came a long way, they're more than capable of putting on a show for the fans, and what's a Saturday afternoon at Lions without the smell of nitro in the air?
Here are pairings for the Open Competition show. The cars have been matched up according to their e.t.s in qualifying, so the racing should be close and exciting. They'll each make one run, but since we've got nine cars in Open Competition, the winner of the last pair will come back to face the quickest non-qualifier.
Looks like we've got a good crowd on hand for Saturday's action. Lions management installed new grandstands on the spectator side, and they're nearly full. Lions management wishes to state that there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that the Rose Parade is missing some bleachers.
First up is Ninjatek's Corvette against Pceng's blue HemiCuda. Ninja's out first, but the Hemi chases him down and takes the win, 1.792/5.95 to 1.846/5.53.
Next up is TGM2045's orange Omni against Charley's mostly orange Vega. A great race, the Chevy takes it 1.701/6.01 to the Dodge's 1.787/6.39!
Looks the Metallica guys were able to pry themselves away from the groupies and the tequila long enough to fire up Cturner1215's Vega Funny Car. He's racing one of California's favorite sons, Jungle Jim in Ninjatek's Chevy II. Metallica is amped up and moves first off the line, but Jungle tracks him down at the top end and takes the win light, 1.516/7.70 to 1.545/7.05 for the boys in the band.
You won't see a pretty pair than this unless you're hanging out with Jungle Pam. Eagleracing brought two stunning Camaros – the blue car ran at the Test 'n' Tune, and the patriotically painted red, white and blue car is just about perfect for the Fourth of July.
Looks like the pre-race testing helped the blue car, which ran 1.324/8.81 to 1.421/8.14 for its star-spangled stablemate.
Bluegnuoy's Coors Vega had the distinction of being the quickest car that didn't make the Chevy team. He's back for a run against Eagleracing's blue Camaro. Man, he's wired to the Tree, takes a tenth of a second holeshot and holds on for the win with a 1.273/9.74 to Eagleracing's quicker-but-later 1.250/8.74. I think they're gonna be drinking some Coors tonight in Bluegnuoy's pits after that one.
That wraps up the NF/C Open Competition portion of today's program. We'll be back for Nostalgia Pro Stock eliminations after your track reporter pays a visit to Bluegnuoy's pit for a brew or two.
