Here's a question, where are you guys getting your braid? I used to use Radio Shack desoldering braid but Tjetsgrig told me not to use it. I don't remember why, but I'm not going to question him. Especially after he took one of my cars and cut the ET in half and almost doubled the speed.

The reason why you shouldn't use that braid is that it's loaded with soldering flux. Makes sense, since it's original use is to 'pull' solder out of electrical connections. Just use 1/32 or 1/43 scale braid. I have a roll I bought on the internet, actually on Ebay. Can't remember the seller (I can look it up if you need me to) but I got it two days after I bought it! LIGHTNING quick! Think it was 5 or 6 bux for about 50 feet or so. If you have a local shop that sells slot stuff you can get it there I'm sure. Slot-It, Carrera, those are just a few of the names to look for. There's a TON of them out there. Ron (Bondo)

Thanks Ron, I knew there was a good reason, I just couldn't remember it. I've got about 20 Carrera cars that came with extra P/U braids that I can raid. Maybe I'll try that. I would think you'd get more from putting shunts on rather than braids.Seems braids would add more drag. Whats everybody's ideas about that?

Hey Tom, had the same RS braid on my car when I sent it to Sgrig's ET comp. Think maybe Ron did to, but not sure. Jim, changed the crown gear (that blew-up), changed the braids. And the car did a .69something, I forget exactly. I do remember all three of our cars were within 2 or 3 hundreths when Jim, finished with them. I spoke to Jim, about braids and different pick-up metals. The thing I remember most was the increased number of paths the flow has when using braids. As for drag, I'm not sure. I know looking at braids after afew passes (I use biiiig magnifying glass). The wires in the wear pattern look as if they are flattening. Maybe the harder composition rails act to smooth the braids. I wonder when seeing stuff about braids if any of us know for sure why they work. Used to have mixed feelings about braids, but after seeing results (with a good braid). They are on every car I have that NTRA rules permit. .........Peter

Hey Kieth, not sure of the guage. I use Wizzard shunt wire I get from "Lucky Bobs". Braided, flexible, and solders real easy. Whatever you use make sure its flexible, don't want to inhibit those pick-ups. Never have had a problem with t-jets but with 4g's clearence can become a problem if your not carefull. ........Peter

Are all large scale slot car braids the same thickness? A friend gave me some to try and they are so thick the smallest tire I can use is the AFX and AM stock tire. Is this the normal set up?

Are silver 1/32 braids any better/worse than the copper ones as far as conductivity or wear?

Do most of you run your 4 gear Doorslammers with or without tracktion magnet? Like for the upcoming Spring Nationals? Just wondering what is the current thought on this. Race on! KAboom

I think most of the guys run the trac mags. Or at least one. I run one on the left side only, and I prefer to run the AW kind, as the Radio Shack is slightly stronger. But then, my chassis are original Aurora Magna Traction type. If I was running a non Magna Traction version, I would run the stronger Radio Shack magnet, since the motor mags actually help the car 'stick' more. And trust me, without at least one, all your car is gonna do is spin. I've tried it both ways, with and without, and on a scale eighth mile and a scale quarter mile. At least it will spin if you are running the 5 to 7 ohm arms in a Doorslammer. Not sure about other classes with the 4 gear chassis. Ron (Bondo)

Hey Keith, I forgot about another reason you'd need that magnet. If you read the description of the track surface of Wood's track, it's Corian. In case you haven't seen Corian before, it's a VERY 'slick' surface. Actually somewhat close to Formica, but even smoother, like Formica under GLASS! So you really need ALL the traction help you can get! I can guarantee you tho, once your car is 'hooked up', that's a GREAT surface to race on! ;D Ron (Bondo)

Have seen several different in every scale. I'm using 1/32 (SCX), same width as pick-ups on 4g's, makes locating them on shoe easier, and thinest I know of. ........PC

Hey Wazzer, I put 1/32 silver braids on when changing from the RS braid. The wear marks on the silver braids all show copper. Just brand, maybe don't know.
Hey Ron, saw what you said to Keith, about track surface. Never entered my mind till now! I Built 2 new D/S's since our match race, should say after the magnet issue - lol. Both are AW chassis with one t/mag. I get some wheel spin but both hook-up real quick. Now I'm wondering would two mags be better than one?? Can't make the t&t, maybe send one car each way for race?? Ooooo....maybe we just have to ask those in the know.....
Hey Blue/Wood, can you tell us what set-up you use. Knowing how many t/mags to use and rear tire type would be a big help. Can't make t&t. I remember post about 4g testing and times. Think I'm in the ballpark, but I'm testing on plastic AW track. Knowing how many t/mags were in your D/S cars would certinly put my mind at ease - lol.
tia.........Peter
