Some Gasser tuning going on at Bear Creek Dragway in preparation for the 2021 NTRA Inland Empire Winter Nationals. Finished the low budget Henry J Gasser custom for the race. The car was already black plastic I just added some details, decals and clear coat. It will be accompanied by my Willys Gasser. Just noticed the cars have lint all over them in the pics .

The 4g Super Stocks showed up for a little track time. A little bit of fine tuning over the next couple of days and the cars should be ready to go.

Finally got around to tearing into my 4g Unlimited to see what went wrong with the gears. The lower 12t drive pinion stripped. The 20t crown still looks fine. I will replace the gear and I think I will add an aluminum or brass bushing on the lower end of the shaft. The end play is starting to get loose. I also may need to add some shims to tighten up the mesh. All issues I call normal wear and tear and are repairable . This chassis and gearset have survived several motors and have 50+ passes on it so I'm pretty happy. Armature also looks good and will stay in the chassis. It is a modest 2.8ohm Eagle Racing arm balanced w/max advanced timing. Magnets are DASH Tjet neo. Car will get new upgraded braids as well.

I have replaced the drive pinion on my 4g Unlimited. Everything else looked ok. I think what happened was the lower cluster shaft hole is showing some wear and allowed the mesh to get too loose for the power I'm putting on it. I added an aluminum bushing there and it tightened everything up real nice. Added new braids and will be doing a couple of small modifications. Keeping it simple....

I got the FED Unlimited repaired and back together for a couple of test passes. Everything is looking good so far....hopefully it stays that way. Plan on doing some tuning on the Unlimiteds and the KW car this next week along with a track tune up. Put some new Eagle Racing shoes on the FED as well.

Nice work Jeff. I worked on an AFX chassis with a similar brass cluster gear. It also had problems with the mesh. I believe it was just not long enough to meet the crown gear properly. Glad to hear yours made 50 runs with no trouble.

As the race draws closer I am doing the tuning on my 2nd 4g Unlimited. This was more or less a tune up but I have gone to some stronger poly magnets. They are sized for Tjet or AFX non MT but are twice as strong as the ones that were in the car. Still not as strong as the neos in the Orange dragster. I also put in new Wizz E81 brushes and repositioned the right rear wheel with shims to tighten up the crown/cluster mesh. I think this is probably going to be the last race for this armature. I have worn out another comm on an Eagle Racing motor. They have proven to be very durable. If it wasn't balanced with epoxy I would just slap another comm on and keep going. I'm hoping the magnets will get me some more performance.

The makings of an AFX all metal Unlimited build. I should be able to come up with a baseline build to work off of. I'm hoping to be able to use some of the new Wizzard sili foams but I don't know if they will be the right sizes that the car likes. I have test fitted the aluminum top plate, motor, and gears and it is really smooth. Motor is an Eagle Racing 2.2 w/timing, strong poly motor magnets (to start out), Hairy Canary 15t brass crown (thanks Rick), and some aluminum fronts. The limer Mustang body will sit on top. I have been wanting to do a build like this for a long time and I'm also looking forward to seeing the other cars in the Class!

Nice build Jeff. I have built an AFX chassis for another racer with that aluminum top plate. It looks good and works OK but I would just like to tell you about a problem I had with it. If you are using the gears that come with the plate the ones I had did not work well. It seems as soon as I pressed them on the metal just gave up and I ended up having to solder both ends of the cluster gear to the shaft to get it to hold. I don't know if the one I had was an exception or not. Since I did that it has held up well but it gave me a hard time. I think you will be surprised how fast some of these pancake Unlimiteds will run even at 20 volts. Sure surprised me.

I do not rely on press fitting gears anymore. At the very least I glue everything. On an Unlimited I will be soldering pinion, clusters gears, and crown. I am looking forward to the build. Don't know how competitive it will be first time out, but it will be a start. I am impressed with this top plate. Very well engineered. I don't see them listed on Ebay anymore. I would like to have one more. I've bee sitting on this one for awhile now.
