Al, NOS still uses the blue bottles but I think they have some that are carbon fiber and brushed aluminum. Others use different colors such as yellow. They all have nitrous oxide in them. It is an oxygen agent which allows extra fuel to be delivered into your system. It also cools the incoming charge which is why you can run high compression ratios. The Beretta was running 15-1. My Beretta had 3 systems on it 2 foggers and a plate under each carb. The foggers inject the fuel and nitrous directly into the intake port. Adjustments are made by different jets that are installed into each nozzle, 8 fuel and 8 nitrous. Fuel pressure adjustments also play a role in your settings. The 2 foggers were capable of adding up to about a 1000hp with the plates good for about another 400. Unfortunately the car could not even handle more than about a 250 shot along with the 632 big chief engine. I never had any serious engine problems running nitrous. Others had many. I was always careful not to run too lean. I did break other parts however. If I did not run aluminum rods I did beat the bearings up frequently. Nitro methane, there is no such thing as nitrous methane, is what the fuel cars run. It is a liquid fuel. It is a slow burning fuel and what you see, at night, coming out of the headers is the unburned fuel still burning. That is why fuel cars are so loud. That and the blower cramming in several gallons of fuel into the engine in just a few seconds.

Al, that's usually nitrous oxide but I've also seen it in white bottles and yellow bottles.when I lived in Spokanee were one of the first guys start running nitrous oxide back in the early eighties.nitrous oxide systems were the first people to make nitrous commercial available to the racer. actually nitrous oxide was first used by the German Luftwaffe airplanes in world war 2.

thanx guys. I always thought it was Nitrous Oxide in the bottles, regardless of color, for the additional oxygen it provides. didn't know about the cooling aspect and THAT is cool! LOL

Yes Al it is cool in more ways than one. I once had one of my bottles sitting in a warm room. I filled my own bottles from a larger bottle and this one I had filled to over the recommended pressure. This gave more pressure for a little more performance on the initial hit. The safety valve, a thin piece of sheet metal, let go and it sounded like a rocket was going off in that room. The Germans sure did use N02 in WW2 and I think we did too.. It was used at high altitudes where the air is thinner to boost the planes performance.

Four small , two big bottles . Two bikes..... bottles were blue & non-painted. A LOT of bikes at times , places like Maple Grove.
Any damage inside from the one that let go ? ...... Peter

The NOS drink was a clever marketing idea; I've never tasted it so I can't attest to it' s quality. And they certainly used NOS to maximum effect in the Fast and the Furious movie series; that's for sure ! ....Terry

I remember an NOS gas additive that was around about 10 years ago or so. No damage to anything when the bottle safety valve let go. Lost ten pounds of nitrous and scared the cat. Who ever wrote the Fast and Furious movies had little knowledge about real drag racing, pretty dumb but then only a few hollywood movies are very knowledgeable about their subject matter.

Pure escapism, but fun to watch. I liked 2 fast 2 furious the best. I don't think Hollywood ever did Drag Racing justice in movies. But it did with Hot Rods; in Thunder Road starring Robert Mitchum and Chris Mitchum ( his real life son ) who played his brother in the movie. A great movie about moonshine runners in the 50's. ....Terry.

I watched the first movie and it was OK. Hollywood is in a world of it's own not worrying about truth in many ways. I remember seeing Thunder road with my father many years ago. It was a pretty good story and somewhat based on how moonshine was run then and now. I have seen it on TV in more recent times.

American Graffiti was the story of my youth. The diner hangout, the cars, the stop light drags, the street race every Tues. or Thurs., The 55 Chevy, Chasing the girls... George Lucas was into drag racing when he was younger. There is no movie I relate to more than that one and in my opinion by far the best of any car related movie. Believe it or not there was a guy we hung out with who's name was Fonzarelli. He had a 60 Chevy 348 tri power with a turtle painted on the drivers door just under the side view mirror and here is the weirdest part, he had the name Fonz in parenthesis right next to that. This was many years before Happy days came around. Unfortunately he did beat my 55 Chevy with a 265 cu. in. dual quad vette engine. He did not hang around long and was gone by the time I had upgraded to a 327. I lived in Staten Island, New York at that time when it was a pretty nice place to grow up. Now it is the pits. Visited there in the 90s and it had really deteriorated. Hylan Blvd. still was the terrible road it always was but much more crowded.

I just remembered when I raced Fonzarelli he was winning when he blew his rear end and I had to tow him back to his house.
