Very much appreciate that info Rick! If you couldn't pull it off one piece, I doubt very much I could . I will attempt the wing & struts a separate piece and see where it goes. Thanks again !!!

Got a little painting done the last couple days. Man oh man, I need new glasses. I don't see the prep work I missed until I see it in the photos . Oh well, could be doin' worse . Finally got up the gumption to try out Bill's flame stencils. That was fun! Tried to do my best sealing them but missed a spot or two so had to adjust a little. The compound curves and some other body lines didn't help much but all in all, I'm pleased with the out come for my first flame job, the next one will be better .
I like the color on the Mustang but not pleased with my prep work. I might dip it and start over. I have a 1/2 sheet of decals for it I need to print. Almost a full side decal and printing extras so if it still don't pass the smell test I'll probably dip it. Got headlights & grill for the Austin on the same sheet, not sure about the grill yet. Had a really good time crankin' up the airbrush, it's been a while but was a lot of fun!

Guess it was chickens today. Outstanding job on the flames Gale!
Air brushing can be a lot of fun.
It’s amazing what you can see on your car when you zoom in on the photos. Makes you wonder, how could I miss that? It would be nice if we could figure out a way to paint through the camera lens.

Flames are friggin killer... You talking about the spot in the front of the door? No need to strip if you got the air brush. Use some spot puddy. Put it right over the paint in that spot. I use a card from a deck of playing cards to put it on. The card is stiff but still flexible so you can put the putty on thin. Just rip the corner of the card to use as your knife. It can be sanded easy with 600 grit then put a little gray primer on with a q tip. Just a light coat to suck into the putty. Then you can wipe that with 800 or 1000 grit. Then just hit it with the air brush it will blend no problem. The playing card is a good mask or edge with the airbrush to saves from having to tape off. I do it all the time. Main reason I love the airbrush. Easier to fix little fenders and panels.

Pretty sure what's there will show thru the planned decal so a repair makes the most sense. Thanks for the brain boost .

I like the headlights and grill on the Austin. Wound up dippin' the Mustang and starting over . . . twice . Learned a few things on both of these and they were a lot of fun to try to bring to fruition. Things always do get better and I will be looking forward to the next ones.

Had a good time at the speedway today making stuff. I haven't messed around with pancakes since my late 20's so it's kinda like all new at this point. In the process of prepping for the upcoming NZ race, I got obsessed with thinkin' I needed a pinion puller so I could attempt to balance some armatures and make cleaning easier. I looked on line and nothing was available/in stock that would pull 4-gear/specialty pinions. So, of course I thought I'd just make one . I wanted it to remove the pinions on T-jet and magna traction plates also so tried to account for that.
This is the parts that wound up making it. I used the knurled nob&shaft from my wheel puller. It's 10-24 threads so used a t-nut for that. The small part of the shaft is .056" diameter and the armature shafts are .067" so figured why not. Also used a couple 1/4" stove bolts recessed into the bottom of the maple piece, nuts for spacers, and wing nuts to hold the other maple piece secure on top. Everything lined up really good and all the different plates fit like they should. I was pleased so far. I had no idea those pinion gears were that secure, wow. Or for that matter, that those plates were so flimsy . The T-jet popped right off (stout plate) but not so with the 4-gear and magna traction.
I got them all removed finally, with no visible damage to the gears. Wound up filing a thin slot in a small screwdriver that I could wedge in between the pinion and plate to stabilize it while I pushed the armature out. The hope is to use this same apparatus to press the gear back on using just a 10-24 bolt. I'll post results of that when it happens .
All in all, a fun day at the speedway . Had it's moments though. Oh boy, next I need to make an armature balance tool .
G
Gale This is a amazing tool, I am just noticing your post ! Everything that is available out there no far that I have found or bought does not do the job 100% of the time 🤔 many broken parts. The reason I was looking through your post was to find out when you might be hosting a Drag Event at your Good Times Speedway ? Fin

Thanks Mike! The concept is copied after a retail item (tried to find the links, didn't happen). The key to it's successful use has been the shim used between the pinion gear and plate. I've tried a number of different things and am presently using a large xacto type blade with a slot (ground into) in it. I have had great success using a similar variation to press the new pinion back on square. With all tools I attempt to use, there has been a learning curve .
I presently have no plans to host a race in Jan/Feb, maybe hopefully later in the coming year. Thanks for asking.

I have one of those tools that uses the shim to pull the pinion off of a T jet. It works for the T jet but does not work well on the AFX and 4G top plate as you say.

I have broke and bent many kinds of metal 🤪 Even the piece that came with the tool bends, But this is the "Best" large xacto type blade with a slot (ground into) Thanks Fin
