Well if there was ever doubt what classes JJ will run in the fall, the smart money is on 4 Gear Unlimited for sure.

Well if there was ever doubt what classes JJ will run in the fall, the smart money is on 4 Gear Unlimited for sure. Get out of my head Darryl . I will be announcing those Classes in the next couple of days. Got my gear plate yesterday. I think I will do one new set up and one old one with my stuff.

With the 3 gear AFX setup like this I found the gears to be brittle when pressing them on the shafts. Hopefully these will be better.

I haven't had any trouble at all with the two 3 gear plates I got. They have been well built and well engineered. So far anyway. I haven't put a ton of runs on them yet. But I don't see any obvious problems. I am glad to have them for sure.

Might there be a link to the 3-gear plates you're referring to please?
Newbie curiosity. I have a lot of catching up to do.
Thank you, Ken

Here's my photo instruction on the 4G top plate installation. The 20T and 12T go on the shaft to the rear of the plate with a washer in between both gears. The 2 ears sticking up is the top of the plate, see pictures. I added 3 nylon .010 shims to the top of the armature before putting the pinion on. I then installed the post in the rear of the chassis. I assembled the top plate to the 4G chassis. This is a 4G chassis with a modified arm and poly magnets. First run is without the plate and second run is with the plate. Pretty much identical but I did not break in the brass gears. I did some break in for a few minutes and tried another run when the rear 20T gear flew off. This is the same problem I had with the 3 Gear setup. I will hunt for the gear now and will have to solder it on. Plate top
Plate bottom
Shims added
Aluminum post location
Without clip
Assembled top
Aluminum post location
Bottom screw
Stock plate
With new plate

Gear went 10' from where it let go, amazing, I found it in the catch box. I soldered it on and would recommend this for any of these gear that are press on shaft mounted. Don't know what is the matter with them, I do not have that problem with new press on gears from other sources. Break in did not help any, it went slower, usual 4 gear noises are absent, it sounds better than normal 4g. More testing needed. This plate is nicely made but as far as my experience with them any of the press on gears do not stay on well. Highly recommend soldering or loctite with all the press on gears.

I am either gluing or soldering them. Same goes with tires. I pretty much glue everything on anymore.

๐ค Good day Drag Mate's! Already anticipating going down to Texas ๐ to the Historical Bear ๐ป Creek Dragway, Working on these "Not" supposed to be 4gear Supercars. You just don't know what will come undone next ๐คช. Took a trip to Smoky Mountain Dragway on the 29th to test all my drag cars That seemed to fall apart at Dave's last event ๐ฌ Even had 2 of them going backwards "A normal Occurrence for me". 4Gear issue that I believe all that enter JJ Wallace event (That's if Jeff runs this class again ??) should correct before the "Big Day" . After testing and running this 4gearย I thought I blew out Another Crown Gear โ. As I disassembled it todayย found the idler gear had come out of position ๐ I was pretty pleased! What I found was the bushing that holds the Idler Gear had dropped down. ๐ค Curious how would any of you Mates correct this issue ? Fin

Was going to suggest soldering it to the bottom of the brass plate, but it appears that you already did that. Could it have been a weak solder joint? Surface may have had a bit of oil on it. It might be worth a try to scuff it real good then clean both surfaces with brake cleaner or alcohol and solder it back together.
Another idea to consider, run a bolt through it and secure a nut with loctite. Since itโs right under the gear plate clip, that would create another problem to resolve.

It is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared for lots of testing. Good to see everybody taking a stab at it! I love this Class! I will be running this again....and again.... I might even do a 4 Gear Unlimited only interim event?? I agree with Bill on the repair. Soldering would be my first choice if possible. I still have some bugs to work out with my build as well. I will post when I get back to working on them.
