Hey guys, Here is something I would like you all to think about and would like to hear your thoughts on. Super Stock is probably the NTRA’s most popular class. We usually have a fair turn out and and it brings out some that normally don't run the other classes. My question to you guys is.. What would make this class more competitive for everyone to run in? What I would like to see is the field tighten up from TQ to last place Qualifier. Here is the biggest problem I see with this class as far as inconsistencies. We are using Motor Magnets that are 40 years old. Who honestly can buy one rolling chassis and be competitive with the magnets that come with? Yeah you might get lucky but from what I’ve seen from the NOS chassis that I have…. It’s not that often. I’m guilty of spending some money on trying to obtain better magnets by purchasing 10 sets of NOS Aurora magnets at a time. I did get one decent set after matching them but also wasted time and money in doing so. This is what I’d like to propose to you, the racers. Why not make a rule change and allow the new Dash Motor Magnets? At around $3 a set it makes more sense to me. Yeah there will be stronger Dash magnets than others but I’d bet if you bought 10 sets of Dash’s and 10 sets of NOS Aurora magnets that you are going to have 10 sets of competitive magnets from Dash . Who knows what you will get with Auroras 40 year old magnets.
I’m not looking at starting a new class for Dash magnets. I am looking for ideas in making S/S a better class. This might not be the way to do it but would like to hear your guys thoughts. I do like the thought of everyone being able to obtain competitive racing parts for their cars without wasting money and time. Let’s stay on the topic of Magnets for now.

That sounds great to me. It's probably the most important reason I'm not competitive as I've not matched any magnets and frankly, don't have the time or inclination to do so. Guess I'm hoping for the other guys to red light. I would rather have the worst pair of Dash magnets that are fairly close to the best pair than spend the time and money hunting for one of the Tjet holy grail's... the perfectly matched set of magnets. Now... about that spec arm...

Sam,
In my experience, the Dash magnets are similar in consistency to stock, JL, and Auto World magnets -- but stronger. I bought 100 pairs of Dash magnets (they are legal in Fray road racing), and on my matcher, they ranged in strength from 199 to 229; for comparison, stock Aurora magnets typically test between 105 and 129 on my matcher, so the spread is about the same (although the percentage difference is obviously smaller with the Dash). When I sort any brand of magnets, I end up with a bell curve -- a few very strong ones, a few weak ones, and a lot of them in the middle of the range.
Having said that, the Dash magnets will certainly improve performance in the S/S class, and will put some brakes in the cars which should help with the shutdown on short tracks. For someone starting out, buying Dash magnets is less expensive than buying complete Aurora chassis to get the magnets, which may or may not be matched. However, there are a gazillion stock Aurora magnets out there to be found for cheap.
So I guess my point is that a serious racer will still need to have a selection of magnets and match them up, whether they're Dash, JL, Auto World, or Aurora. That's what comes with trying to turn a $2 toy car into a Rolex watch. Whatever the rules committee decides is OK with me, but I don't think that magnets are necessarily the silver bullet.
My $.02, Rick V.

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm not trying to open a can of worms for anyone, just interested in making this class better. Anybody know where I can get a selection of the magnets below. If so please respond. Just curious, Why did most Fray clubs switch to Dash and AW magnets? I know they help with braking but why didn't they use Super 2 magnets or stock Aurora?

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm not trying to open a can of worms for anyone, just interested in making this class better. Anybody know where I can get a selection of the magnets below. If so please respond. Dynamic Armatures has them for $0.50 a pair. Jaghobbies has them for $1.00 a pair. I don't see a magnet change as being the "field leveler". I ran strong magnets in my challenger and upper mid strength magnets in the cuda. On my track the challenger pulls the cuda out of the hole. The cuda has caught it by the 1/8th and then pulls away from the challenger. Just like in a real engine, everything has to work together. I believe that there is as much or maybe more speed to be found in pick-up shoe adjustment and spring tension. Unfortunately you can't find that on a dyno or by listening to the car run. It takes test runs and lots of them.

I think dash magnets would make them have to run "Modified Production"

LOL, and I'm joking when I say this. Since magnets do not seem to be a issue with anyone so far, how about we have a .50 cent claim rule to where anybody can buy anybodies magnets. The 50 cents will cover the cost to buy new ones ;D

I haven't went through as many as Rick but have matched 20 pairs of the dash magnets, I know it was stated early on, that they came well matched but that isn't what I have found, I feel they aren't matched any better than T Jet magnets are. So you still buy at least 10 and have to match them.
Both of my SS cars want to wheelie off the line I already have as much solder as the chassis will hold to keep it down. With the stronger magnets we would probably have more of this a nightmare for the host if there are bunch of DNF's to explain.
Maybe the 8 quickest should drag scale concrete blocks down the track ;D Only kidding Rick & Matt would have so many it would mess up the other car as well ;D
I know this club is based on Heads Up racing but Bracket racing at some Sportsman events really could be a way for guys just starting or on a tight budget to have a shot at winning an event.
We bracket race a bunch, as we started as a Road Race club, and frankly if we didn't we wouldn't draw 14 to 20 guys at the Drag races.
I would help someone that had some magnets to match as long as they send return postage, and ample time. Possible we could twist some of the fast guys arms to show how they prep their cars, i would be glad to do it, I am by far not the fastest builder here.

I am staying on the sidelines of this one!! ;D
The Bracket racing is a good suggestion, if the host is willing to undertake the added work.
I understand that several other groups have 'sanctioned' the Dash magnets under the belief, erroneous or otherwise that the magnets are more consistent. If I recall, they did have some data to support the claim.

It looks like this thread is veering way off the topic of magnets . . .but Kdog is right, if you want to take the car out the equation, then the alternatives are an IROC or bracket race format.
I'm not sure how that will work for a mail-in NTRA race. Can I just send in my reaction times? Wow, another .000 perfect light in Round 2! <g>
It's my opinion that the Fray, ECHORR, VHORS, etc. approved the Dash magnets because there was no practical way to keep them out. They are painted like early JLs, they're readily available online at a reasonable price, they're similar (but not identical) in strength, and the Auto Worlds (which are typically between the JL and Dash) had already been accepted. How's a tech guy supposed to be able to tell them apart when he's got a dozen cars to tear down? Dash magnets were popular at this year's Fray in Ferndale because of the increase in magnetic downforce they provide with short (.332" dia.) silicone/foam tires, but that's road racing, not drag racing. Most Fray racers were willing to trade slower top speeds for faster corner speeds.
As I said, I'll run whatever magnets the Rules Committee decides are legal in S/S, but let's not make this any more complicated than it has to be.
FWIW, Rick V.

I don't feel it needs to be complicated either but I do have to look at it as a Racers point of view as well the co-founder of the NTRA. I'll always look at ways to make these races better for everyone and just thought I'd throw this topic out there. Top 6 cars qualified within roughly a tenth. The rest of the cars were .25 and slower. I'm not a rocket scientist but on a 7-8' track, that's pretty brutal. Yeah a lot of fine tuning comes into play with the pick up shoes and have done many test here. As Kdog said they might be too much magnet for the car causing more font end hop. That could be a issue whick could lead to other modifications such as a wheeli bar or traction magnet. I have no interest in proxy bracket or index racing, just seems pointless to me. I don't think anybody should sit out on this topic. I'll go with what the majority think. So no takers on my claim rule?

Rick is right, the dash are hard to recognize. I have 1 set and they got mixed in with my jl/aw magnets and I don't know which ones are the dash. I checked them with my brp magnet matcher when I got them and I wasn't really impressed. They were about the same strength as the light blue/white AW and blue/yellow super2 magnets that I have. I don't remember the exact numbers but they were not matched very well but that's just 1 pair.

Looking at the posts tonight forget Bracket racing. Than the option is what we are doing now Heads up racing for those who have the heart to do it.
I started racing again after a 30 year Break, I realized there was a learning curve to get back in. I race every week just for the fun of it. sometimes you have a good resualt sometimes not. The fact that in this group we have exciptional Builders / Racers that can dominate a field of racers, I think is a heathly thing. It gives everyone something to shoot for, I love the Heads up format we use, I havn't won a race yet, but will continue to send cars. Why because I want to race!
I personally enjoy tying to build these cars fast enought to compete, and no bad feelings if I don't win, but I won't stop trying to build a winning car
There is no way that I can think of in this format to make everyone fast.... just be happy with a "B" class win, and use it as a learning experiance to move up.

I agree Dog. I'm competitive but enjoy just being in the mix more than anything. I was happy with the way my cars ran. Qualifying 6th and 7th out of 27 is awesome.
