Sam.. I have a set made for this one.. Since I'm not getting enough lift to warrant them. I havn't put them on. hmm mine look slomething like those,, where did I get that idea? I'll put em on the car and Tim can fine tune it for your track. Feb. 23 rd is fine, I'll see if I can find some more performance out of this in the meantime. might even hack around on the body alittle. Chris

Ran some more times with the 57 tonight. Having the wheelie bars on helped considerably. Posting times from 1.10 to 1.13's was much better than the .0800 difference I had last week. After running a bit I went ahead and put on some braided pick up shoes. Big difference. I ran into some more inconsistent times. I think it was from the stock rear tires. After each run the left rear would be hanging half way off of the wheel. I thought I would go ahead and put on the Jel Claws. I didn't mic them but they appear by eye balling them that they are the same dimensions. They do fit tighter on the wheel. I suggest that if your using the stock tires that you bond them to the wheels. On the Jel Claws I did have to remove some flashing from one side of the tire. Easily done with a hobby knife. The Jel Claws are a little bit softer compound over stock AW. I think they helped but am not totally sure. I should have bonded the stock rears and got times from both. Enough about the tires. Putting braids on the pick up shoes is such a big improvement. I gained over .3 . I posted a best of .7867 @ 17.09 MPH that's a gain of about 6 MPH! It's already starting to get some hop from only having one traction magnet. Remember I'm putting 24 volts to it. Chris, I'll get the magnets and have Tim place one on your car to continue our run on 24 volts, if you don't mind. Rare earth magnet dots from Radio Shack are around $3 for two. Not a bad price at all. We are not racing for a few weeks so I'm going to start working on the cars appearence. Next chassis mods I will do is adding more brush tension and adding the extra magnet. I'm starting to like this car. Not the best chassis by far out there but it's coming along. Here are some pics of the braids. Look in Tech Tips for the same method. What do you think Phil? Much better than the botched job on the Tbird I sent you to run at the 2007 1492 Nationals at NoCo Drag-O-Rama.

As many of you have seen.. what started to be a simple low budget build on the Pychoslot board, has turned into a low budget "grudge match"! Myself,, I feel it is more of a Saturday nite style street race,, ok,, so we are using a dragstrip. With the pics and stories posted here of days gone by, as they were meant to do,, they took me back to the days of street races, stop light drags etc.. honestly ,,I have never raced on a 1:1 sanctioned track. For one reason or another I just never advanced that far to spend the bucks to be within the rules of engagement, not that it wasn't a dream, it just never happened.
Sam posted his budget build, and admittedly I challenged him to get with it, I wanted to see what he had. Back in the day ,, this was a crack of the throttle as one passed the other in opposite directions,, yes it was an unspoken language, body language in a sense only a street racer understood.. He answered, with his *'sense a grudge match" oh yes the 4bbl carb was howling!! Was that a little chirp out of tires I heard as you dumped the clutch?
So now in the last couple of weeks, Sam has posted his mods.. I have reported mine, nothing on my end to see, it was just simple grease monkey mods.. We have talked,, and bantered in fun back and forth, email, pm's and phone.
We have agreed, we will have a race! Downside we are over 1000 miles apart, don't think a weekend run for me in the 1:1 is gonna happen, so I have a driver waiting to fill in on the Colorado side of this little adventure, Tim Warner is one of the best slot car builders in any scale and being a Friend of mine for many years, he's recieved the tap to do the job! Tim will recieve the car and do the final Altitude adjustments to make it competitive on the Psychoslots strip in Colorado Springs.Provided,, he don't bring a pillow to the line, I am confident Tim will do the best he can with what he has to work with. Keep and eye on the boards for the race,, and have some fun with the journey Sam and I have come up with.
For those of you in the hobby, just coming in or returning.. Remember this is all in FUN and we hope you enjoy the ride.. Sam, the car is loaded and ready to roll that way, Tim and the 57 will see you at the line. Bring it!!
Chris Sam,, you were looking for Dad's keys,,,,LOL my old man is gonna kill me and ground me till I'm too old to drive, when he sees what I did to his 57...

I love this project! I hope this becomes a series. Maybe many of the guys will folow this article and you can stage an "all Chevy" mail in class at one of your scheduled meets. I would certainly be interested.

John, Stay tuned,, the story isn't over yet, remember Feb.23 is the race. My car still has to make the ride, from S.In. to C.Springs,Co. Chris For the record, Sam and I started with the same cars, His the AW 57 chevy Red, mine metallic Coffee they call it... Looked black to me. Now the twist in the story, sit down, buckle up, (ok might not need to buckle up after all they are stock AW). Enjoy the build,, and the trip as it evolves from S. Ind to Colorado. (man,,the things we will do for an old fashioned street race). After some time in the shop doing some supertuning to the old man's car, and several visits from Sam I decided leaving her in stock dress wasn't gonna work, and what the heck,, if i do it right! The old man won't notice what I did to his daily driver.. (boy am I in trouble) one thing led to the other and now she looks more like something only driven on Sun. and not by a little old lady goin to church. Honestly ,,I scewed up the paint job so I had to go for a repaint,, so off to the body shop for a complete strip down and primer, then back to the shop for more work on the engine/motor. I'm waiting to get her in, finally she's in the shop,, not much happening , I think Babbett ,, is causing a lot of distraction around the shop. You know what they say, 'if it has T&^& or wheels ,, you are gonna have problems. At this point, both seem to be a problem. Just as I am ready to roll her out and back on the trailer, for a trip to get paint,, who shows up?? Sam! Again! Looking all preppy in his striped shirt and pressed blue jeans(geek). Smirking as he looks over the hood and in the hole where the blower is going to punch through. ' ya know ya got a hole in your hood there genius?' I reply,, 'yep got to have a way for the mice to get in and out' as I'm getting in the old chevy to load her up for another trip to the body shop, then back to the garage to 'fill the hole' in the hood. As if I wasn't already in enough trouble when the old man finds out!

Dig the pictures and story Chris. Geek? Come to think of it, I did where a striped shirt at our last race . Did a little work to mine. I sanded off the side moulding, removed the rear bumper and some of the front. I also took off the hood, note that if you decide to do this, you'll have to come up with another way of mounting the front. The screw post is mounted to the underside of the hood. I have a set of vincent wheels on with jelclaw rears and o-ring fronts. I opened up the rear fender wells a little. Probably do a little more and get the front end up higher. Next I'll strip the paint and primer it. Hey Chris, I have one of those rat holes too! Oh yeah, Leave it on the trailer, that's the fastest it'll ever go!

Very Cool Sam I have toyed around with the idea of a 55 to 57 gasser in primer of course, with tiny holes drilled where the chrome trim would have come off , like the guys I hung around with when we first got cars. They would strip off the trim, primer the car but never fill the holes. We didn't have enough cash to convert to straight axels so we would beat 2x4 wedges into the front springs to get the look. It would last long enough for a couple of passes down Hall St ( the local unsantioned drag strip ) Impressing the ladys is a lot of work ! Anyway I can hardly wait to see the finished Gasser, like I said before if looks could kill ! Kevin

Thanks Kevin, Here is a picture after painting it. I went with a white base, taped off the roof. Sprayed it metallic silver then put some candy gold over it and clear coated it. Decals are from Tmead. This picture is of it unmounted. The plastic motor is from a die cast. I kept the trim around the windows and part of the front bumper. Along with removing the side molding, I removed the rear emblem off the trunk and the windshield wipers. The windows will go back in. I hate black windows! What were they thinking? One thing that will jack the price of your build up fast is if you have to buy 3-4 different paints. You'll only use a small amount for one project. The good news is you'll be able to use them on other projects in the future. Also try and order parts, tires etc....... when your buddies want some too. This way you can split the cost on shipping. Too quiet over in your camp Chris, What's going on?

Sam, Looking good! Quiet? just been waiting on you, Ya know just sort of idling around the block. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally, it's back from paint, plugged the hole in the hood, added some of my decals, and since it's coming out of the South, Ok so S. IND. I put the stars and bars in the back window.. Time to load her up and get ready to head out for the ride to C Springs.. hope the old Blazer makes the trip without much trouble. Later Chris..

Kind of like staging, Nobody wants to be the first to put up the stage light and just sit while the other guy sits pre staged.

LOL.... yeah,, that is it.... or,,,something like this.. Buddy of mine had a sweet 57 when we were in high school.. punched 283 ,,out to 292..basically stock otherwise... He decided to go cruising in a small town in N. Kans one night.. I chose to stay home... the story goes,,,, Kid in a 66 mustang coupe pulled him over and mouthed off... about how fast the stang was... etc... the stang,,badged 289 4spd stock tires wheels and hubcaps.. Tom took the challenge.. at this point, the kid with the stang ,, asked if he could change tires... it was agreed he could go ahead and change out the rears... shouldn't be a problem..why a stock 289 needed different tires was puzzling..but the "whatever" attitude went anyway.. 20 minutes went by,,,Tom hears a rumbling coming up the road.. up pulls a red 66 stang,,, small block. with a blower and full blown racing slicks..This guy had 2 stangs, one for the bait and one for the switch. Now..this is the part I never quite understood... Tom run it anyway... got his wings clipped pretty good... come straight back to town ,,beating on my door at 1:00 am telling me this story... After that,, I don't believe any more tire changing was agreed on, atleast when I was with him.. No,,Sam I'm not pulling a "tire change" on ya .... the lurking just reminded me of a good story from back in the day.... See ya on the street,, Chris

Bait and switch, too cruel . I like what you did with your car. Drive it through town during the week and take her to the track on Sunday. Looking forward to trying out those Silifoams from Dragjet. Sam

Very cool, nice choice of colors / decals i am all over the Mead's decals at least once a week myself. The cool thing is if you look close alot of the J L / Auto World bodys have seprate hoods great for guys who like to tinker around. I have a 62 Belair on the bench now, got a 2 - 4 barrel engin top I would like to rest just at the hood line. Kevin

Thanks. I dig the decals and the colors too. Here are a few more shots. Not sure about the F/C headers. Stuck those on to see how they look.
