The fact that some cars perform differently on each track has been a topic of conversation here a few times. In fact, I think it was discussed in this thread. It's certainly not consistent. The orange Camaro really likes Smoky Mountain speedway. It bettered its best practice time by nearly a tenth. .675 vs .578. On the other hand, the gold 57 Vette slowed from .634 to .6607. This car regularly beat the Camaro in practice. The blue 60 Vette slowed a bit too, .509 vs .5259. The white 57 Vette's best practice run was .423 vs .4444 but that's a little better than its average of .481. Do the rest of you experience such variation? Bill I do as well. So many variables come into play......track type.....surface.....prep.....power supply....length....etc. Dave's track probably has the most amps available and the cars typically should run better there........at least on paper. We also can't forget about the mail handlers and the "curse of the box" that can sometimes come into play. I keep record of ET'S at different tracks we run and consider that when tuning. My stockers tested in the low .6's and got into the .5's at Smoky Mountain. I am usually .02 - .04 faster there depending on the build.

The fact that the Smoky mountain track has 2 30 amp power supplies makes a big difference with some cars, it also has 3 #10 power inputs at the start middle and end. Even switching between stock AFX track to the Max trax improved all the cars times. Obviously Bill's Camaro really liked it. I have found that the pancake cars vary a lot more than the inline cars but even those seem to take fits and run strong or weak at times. The cars I recently sent to New Zealand were way slower there than on my track. The maroon 69 Camaro was running in the mid .8s here and the best it could muster on any or those tracks was a mid 1.1. so the power supplies and track make a big difference even with 14 ohm armatures.

Cars pulled in the driveway this afternoon. Had a good time racing with you all this past weekend at Smoky Mountain and Sandfly.

Got the cars back yesterday. I'm curious though. Those that ran the Tomy SG+. Did you run the brush bulk head in the neutral position with the stock Tomy rubber tire rear end?

The 2 I ran in comp had different tires and rims. The super comp were all G3s with either silifoam or Super tires. On each SG+ or G3 I check the times with the timing advanced, retarded and neutral and go with the quickest ET. Most cars run best in either neutral or advanced. I don't think I have ever had one run quicker in the retarded position but it is 50-50 for advanced or neutral which kind of surprised me as I thought advancing the timing usually helped motor performance.

Vince all I have is SG+ type cars, but only two are Tomy. The rest are BSRT or Viper. Far superior chassis....I have problems with stock splitting. My two stockers ran with slip on silicone tires...one with stock AFX MT rims and the other with a double flange. The timing bulkhead was in the advanced position on both, but honestly as Dave said, I did not see much difference in ET's from neutral to advanced. But I run in the advanced position unless specified not to or if I do see a significant drop in performance. Everything else was stock except for front rims and axle on Torino. I thought about the tires and rims when getting the cars ready, but figured if they weren't allowed then my cars would not run or get moved up to ISS. Either way I left it up to the Racemaster. I know these were Smoky Mountain rules, but NTRA rules do allow for aftermarket slip ons in Stock class and I didn't have any stock rims and rubber tires to put back on anyway. Those things pretty much hit the trash can immediately.

Requiring stock tires on stock cars would be hard to police. I certainly would not know what is stock and what is not. Might be able to tell if a silicone tire was put on but some like the new Jag chassis come stock with silicone tires. I will, in the future, do a test on some of the super G+ and G3 cars running the cars advanced, retarded and neutral to show what effect it has on the cars.

Dave, Didn't you already do some tests in all 3 advance positions and post it? Bill

Now that you mention it I think I did. You obviously have a better memory than I do. and here it is, I re read the article and learned from it. 6 months ago and I forgot about it?? nitroslots.com/thread/4288/super-timing-test

That's good stuff right there! I like to see tuning info like that. I remember you posting it before, but good to go through it again.

My cars arrived home safely today. Thanks for organising these events, I will definitely take part next time. Please keep me updated about any other proxy races. Maybe I can do better next time.

Clive your stockers did well for a first shot and I am sure you will move on up. I am impressed with the speed that the mail delivered the package. Royal mail must be spot on.
