Hi Guys, I am building a strip at home so that I can do some better testing. At the moment I simply lay some track on the floor, which can be a pain at times. I have laid a base along the side of my workshop and have a total length of 15 feet. I am looking at a strip length of possibly 12 feet with a 3 foot shutdown. I am not sure if this will be enough until I try it out. I have a Slot Dragon timing system to set up. The main question is what type of track to use as I will using plastic track. I have plenty of Tomy AFX but I am considering the old Aurora track as it has a smoother track joint and will be permanent.. I was also considering using early micro Scalextric track as the slots are about 1/8th of an inch wider apart. The only problem with this is the sets are made for children to lay on the floor and the sets are mostly small with only a couple of straights in each set. I am asking advice from my drag buddies as I know you have all had much more experience at building strips.

My first track was Tomy AFX nad I was very happy with it's performance. But I nailed it to my table which helped to smooth it out. The Aurora track will be smoother but the groove is not as deep. That may or may not be an issue? Not familiar with the Scalextric. I think you will definitely like and benefit from a track to test and play around with. What power supply are you looking at using?

Thanks Jeff, at the moment the only power supplies that I have are standard Tomy type but I will need to get a proper power supply that can be adjusted. I will have my track secured to the base board, I am also thinking of soldering wire between each track section to ensure a constant connection.

agree with Jeff. you should be just fine with the Tomy AFX track when you secure it in place. good to hear you are taking this step. you won't regret it. 30 volt, 10 AMP power supplies are around $60 USD here. a search using those words should reveal some of the same available to you and they work great.

Mine is tomy afx and autoworld track. I also used small wires and jumper wired the track sections. I think if you already have track use it. If your worried about where the connections are at, you can always use vinyl spackling and fill them and sand smooth. I did this on my road course and you can't hear anything but the cars very smooth. if you do this and paint your track use flat or satin paint. Gloss paint would loose traction I think.

P.s. if you use tomy/autoworld track. There are spots you can drill out for screws underneath the track pieces. Number 2 screws will fit and go in flush. Tomy I think has the hole all the way through you just need to make it a little bigger

Your track looks great with the joints filled. I have made a start. I laid the track today using Tomy track, I have a strip of just under 12 feet and the shutdown of 3 feet is just enough but I will need a cushioned catch box at the end for faster cars especially when I have more power . I have found a power supply similar to the new one that Jeff has. The track is not secure yet but I have the Slot Dragon fitted, it is not working yet as I will need to get an English power supply (our plugs are different). I have tried a few cars by simply switching the power on so I will need to add a proper switch system when I get the new power supply.

Clive I was thinking maybe you should go for the 1/8 mile. Then you could have something to kind of compare to. You could look at our 660 mark to compare to your track. The sensors would be in the same spot. Going for full length is probably all of our first instinct, but just having something to look at between all the tracks opens another door.

I agree with Sam having an equal length for comparison purpose is nice and helped me a lot. You are also going to want more than 3 foot of shut down .my previous track was tomy eighth mile with a slot dragon and before i extended the shut down i wasn't able to run all my cars without damaging them.my new track has 10 foot of shut down with stop strip the entire length and some of my cars especially the pancakes use it all

Thanks for the advice guys. I have adjusted the track so I now have the 660 length, I am glad that you advised me of this before I secured it.

Gentlemen, I have great pleasure in announcing that the new 1/8th mile, Tilney Park Dragstrip, in Norfolk England is now up and running I now need to secure the track fit a safety barrier and do some cosmetic work to improve the overall look.
