Stock Eliminator First Round Apologies from the Lions Drag Strip management. The sheer excitement of the NTRA World Finals has overtaxed our steam-powered computer, and we are now filing reports on an IBM Selectric. We really need to get a computer that doesn't have vacuum tubes . . . Where we were? Oh yes, Stock eliminator. But before we get into round-by-round coverage, we need to introduce our ace reporting team. Our anchor in the timing tower is Jon "Thunderlungs" Lundberg. This guy has so much voice that he doesn't need a PA system. Our man on the strip is cub reporter Ted Tappet. Ted is just sure that covering the NTRA Nationals will be his break into the Big Time, with a steady gig at Drag News and free T-shirts sure to come his way. The third member of our team is roving pit reporter Aurora Divine. She obviously has points that recommend her. We're looking to Aurora to get all the news that's fit to print. OK, back to our regularly scheduled race reporting. First up is Stock Eliminator. Fifteen cars answered the call to the staging lanes for the first round of Stock. No. 1 qualifier Wood will get a bye run to lead off the round. Wood put it to the wood on his single, showing why he's No. 1 in Stock with a 1.403 on his run. Next up is a battle of Chevelles as Ninjatek's No. 22 takes on Nosubfor3's No. 12. Nosubfor3 is out first and wins it, 1.983 to a close 2.012. Eddiebee's No. 7 GTX lines up against Bluegnuoy's candy red Nova. The Chevy takes the win light, 1.547 to a 2.273 for the Mopar. Eddiebee gets another chance when his '70 Chevelle squares off with Nosubfor3's sharp '69 Camaro. The Camaro seals the deal, 1.566 to Eddie's 2.759. No. 3 qualifier 440GTX brings his neon No. 8 Road Runner to the line against Ford Cowboy's No. 9 Mustang. Hemi power takes the victory, 1.484 to the Cowboy's 2.079. The Cowboy rides again, this time against another member of the Ohio Mafia, Derwood's No. 32 Challenger. Same outcome, as the Mopar gets the win light with a 1.628 to the Ford man's 2.434. Looks like Sandy Elliott's on his way back to Canada, eh? Derwood has to scramble to get back to the staging lanes to drive his second entry, the No. 16 Cuda. He's got Ninjatek in the other lane this time. Mopar power prevails with a winning 1.574 to Ninja's 2.142. The first round concludes with No. 2 qualifier 440GTX against Scottman's AMX. Matt shows he's serious with the quickest e.t. of the round, a 1.391. "Wild Ride" is an apt name for the short wheelbase Rambler -- this car is a handful, and deslots at mid-track. What's the story, Ted? "Looks like the AMX threw a tire," Ted said. "Those RRR wheels and tires are good lookin', but they aren't all that round." Second round coming up.

Stock Eliminator Round 2 We're down to eight cars and no more bye runs. First up is Wood's red-white-and-blue Oldsmobile against Nosubfor3's Chevelle. Wood drops the Big One on the Stocker troops, reeling off Low ET at 1.362 at 8.96 mph to the Chevelle's game 1.984. These guys are teammates, but it's a straight-up race between Bluegnuoy's Nova and Nosubfor3's Camaro. The F-body gets the win, .1534 to a 1.568 for the Nova. The Ohio Mafia has an intramural match in the second round as 440GTX draws Derwood's Challenger. It's all Road Runner as the neon Mopar runs 1.452 to turn back the Challenger's 1.671. It's another Derwood vs. Matt matchup in the final pairing. Different cars, same result: 440GTX's Road Runner gets the win at 1.475 to Derwood's 1.617. Next up: Stock semifinals.

Stock Eliminator Round 3 We're down to the Final Four in Stock eliminator. This is a tough quartet in the staging lanes at Lions. Wood's 4-4-2 continues to set the pace, posting a stout 1.397 to defeat Nosubfor3's 1.597 in the striped Camaro and advance to the final round. 440GTX has a lock on a final round spot with two Matt Mopars in the semis. The No. 8 rates as the favorite based on its quicker e.t in the second round, but the No. 24 pulls off the upset and takes the win, 1.409 to 1.449 -- the margin of victory a slim 14 thousandths of a second. As soon as the cars get back to the staging lanes, we'll have the first final round of the NTRA World Finals.

Stock Eliminator Final Round This is the trophy run in the NTRA's first Stock eliminator race. It's Matt vs. Wood, Mopar vs. GM, for all the marbles. Based on e.t.s in the three preceding rounds, the tri-colored Olds has to rate as the favorite -- Wood's been running 1.30's all day. But this isn't 440GTX's first rodeo, and he can handle the pressure. No mind games at the starting line, they both pull in and light both bulbs. At the green, the Mopar moves first -- and the Olds spins the tires one revolution before it hooks and launches! That could be the race! It's close at the finish -- the the win light comes on for 440GTX. The mighty Mopar runs another 1.409 at a booming 8.62 mph, while the Olds drops off to a 1.445 at 7.91 mph. A great final to the inaugural Stock Eliminator! Well wishers, autograph hounds, and Hemi groupies crowd around 440GTX's Road Runner as Matt brings her back to the pits for the victory celebration. Aurora Divine is asking for an up-close and personal interview with the winner. We're past curfew at Lions Drag Strip, and the neighbors are calling the cops. What do they think they're gonna do, shut the place down? Well, it's tired and I'm getting late, so we'll resume coverage from the NTRA Finals on Monday morning. Good night from Lions Drag Strip. Racemaster Rick

Good job Wood.
I was a little concerned going into that final race. Going off of the semi-final times I knew it would be a close race.
I can't wait to see the rest of the results tomorrow.

B/Gas Eliminations Racing has resumed at Lions Drag Strip. The spectators and racers were very understanding when track management had to shut down eliminations last night due to the late hour and impending curfew, plus last call at the local bar. The six porta-johns that were burned was no big deal, they probably needed to be cleaned anyway. With 20 Gassers making the call for the NTRA Finals, the top 16 will compete in A/Gas and the remaining cars will run for the B/Gas title. Here's the elimination ladder for B/Gas: The first pairing is all-Eddiebee, all the time. His supercharged Stingray takes the win over its ailing stablemate with a 1.182 e.t. -- the '57 finally expired for good at the 1/8th mile, and was towed off. The other first round match in the B/Gas runoffs pitted Fordcowboy's gorgeous Boss 429-powered Henry J against Scottman's primered Bad Medicine Willys. The Rat Rod-style Gasser took the win, 1.113 to 1.481. The B/Gas final went to Scottman's Willys, taking the victory with a 1.114/10.96 mph to Eddiebee's 1.348/8.50. Congratulations to Scottman for winning the B/Gas title at the inaugural NTRA World Finals!

A/Gas Round 1 There's no question that A/Gas will be an intensely competitive eliminator. The 16 cars that qualified for the field represent a mix of Old School and modern muscle. Here's the elimination ladder -- whoever makes it to the final is going to earn it! Before we get to eliminations, we have an update from roving pit reporter Aurora Divine. What's up, Aurora? "It looks like Nosubfor3 has got some extra help in the Gasser pits from the Flying Aces. They changed four tires, added two cans of fuel, and put a round of wedge in the left rear of the Goodwrench Chevy, he's good to go to the checkered flag. No, wait, wrong racing series. Never mind." Thanks for that, Aurora. OK, back to drag racing. The first pair out of the staging lanes pits No. 1 qualifier SKR against No. 16 Bluegnuoy in identical Mooneyes Willys. That's Sam in the far lane, or maybe it's Bluegnuoy. Darn hard to tell the apart from the timing tower. Anyway, one of the yellow cars goes .618, and the other one deslots as soon as the driver drops the clutch. The Lions bite claims another victim. Both drivers had identical reaction times before it all went wrong. OK, we've got confirmation from the top end that Sam won that one. It's a pair of candy apple Gassers up next, with Tyler's Nova taking on Derwood's Willys. These guys quaified 8th and 9th, so this should be the closest race of the round. Derwood doesn't disappoint and takes the win at .641, with Tyler trailing at .707. It's Derwood again, taking on Tyler's teammate Swamper in the yellow Nova. The supercharged Cuda has too much horsepower for the injected Chevy, and Derwood gets the win in .663 seconds to Swamper's slowing .946. Let's see if that NASCAR science works in straight line racing. Nosubfor3's silver-and-black Chevy is up against Richard's stars-and-bars Plymouth. The Cuda sends the Chevy packing, .622 to .873. The Dodge Father qualified No. 3, and he's up against SST1610's sharp '55 Chevy. It's all Mopar at the finish line stripe, as 440GTX takes the round win with the first five of eliminations, a .597 to the supercharged Chevy's .950. It's Demon's stealth black Willys against Nosubfor3's silver Austin in the next pair. Both drivers leave the line with identical reaction times, but Demon pulls away steadily and takes the win, .757 to .794. When was the last time you saw a blown Torino in A/Gas? Well, you can see anything at Lions. Wood's good-looking Ford is up against another yellow Willys, this one from Ninjatek. Well that's one less yellow Willys in the lineup as Wood takes the win at .732 to Ninja's .751. The last race of the first round pits 440GTX's Mopar-powered Willys against the classic '57 Chevy of Ninjatek. It's a walk-over for the Willys with a .622 to the Bow Tie's .958. We'll be back with second round action shortly.

A/Gas Round 2 Eliminations With eight cars left in eliminations, the racing is getting serious in A/Gas. We start the round with two of the heavy hitters in the class, SKR vs. Derwood. SKR takes the win with a .627 to 'wood's .764 -- but he's got to be concerned that his yellow Willys has slowed down considerably in eliminations after running .5's easily in qualifying. It's a pair of Plymouths on the line as Derwood's supercharged Cuda lines up next to Richard's injected Hemi. Derwood's out first -- can he hold off the Confederate Cuda? Oh, this is painful! Derwood takes the win light with a .649 to Richard's quicker-but-later .614. The driver has left the room with a paper bag over his head. Sorry, Richard, holeshots happen. Now for something completely different: two Willys Gassers. At least they're different colors this time, with Demon in black (what else?) and 440GTX in yellow. The Dodge Father lays down another five, this time a .596, to put Demon on the trailer with a .733. We wrap up the second round of A/Gas eliminations with 440GTX's candy apple red Hurst Willys up against Wood's supercharged Ford. The Willys takes the win at .636, with the Ford crosses the stripe in .725 seconds. Next up: A/Gas semifinals!
