Very nice work Rick, looking forward to seeing some more of those gears.

Rick, excellent. I sure am interested in buying some should they become available. looks like good clean cuts and dimensions. thank you for going the distance. Happy New Year

Thanks for all the positivity. Wasn’t sure if I could do it. Bill yes they are 60 pitch gears. I couldn’t get the gear cutters I needed. Couldn’t find any anywhere. I settled with using a 60 degree cutter that I stumbled across. Which so far is working good. If I knew what I was looking for and what I needed it would be a lot easier. I got a mill a few years back from a chassis builder buddy, he upgraded and gave it to me. It’s nothing fancy and a little wore out but I can’t complain about free. And I bought a dividing head that I never heard of but is used for cutting gears and other things that need to be evenly spaced. I have a small table top lathe I picked up for $100. I’m learning as I go. It’s slow I have to do everything manually and the machines have some slop I have to deal with. A lot of trial and lots of error because of my stupidity😁 Skillet thanks for the suggestion but I think I can machine it so the crown will have enough meat to be soldered or glued/lock-lite on. My test one I did I used lock-tite and it held up so far. But would not hold up on a unlimited. Soldered on it would. I will keep my progress updated as I go.

Great job, I am certainly interested if you chose to sell them.

Sam I'm not sure how I missed this, but that is some beautiful work there. Have you done anything else with it? I'm trying to decide the final format on my March race and the 4g Unlim. might make another showing......in Match races if nothing else. Good stuff!

I had some time yesterday to goof around with some new toys I've been collecting for awhile to attempt on making us some crown gears for our hopped-up pancakes. I'm not a machinist don't pretend to be and have no idea on what I'm doing and any input would be appreciated. I'm learning on the fly while I'm going. This is my first try at machining a 15 tooth crown out of brass. except I did the math wrong and it turned out a 16 tooth. It needs a shoulder for more surface area on the axle. For the t-jet will be easy on the backside of the gear the 4G needs to be on the inside or the tooth side of the gear which for my machining skills might take some trial and error to figure out . I tested it on a t-jet Gasser chassis I had just to see how it meshed ? And it seemed to mesh pretty good. It actually performed better than the gear I had in it. Now that I think I will be able to make some crown rears I'm going to order some silicone bronze material. I also picked up some 20 tooth brass pinion wire for the top cluster gear and idler. Thank You Jeff for hooking me up with the pinion wire source. And I found a aluminum 60 pitch 26 tooth gear that I'm going to try to make work for the big idle gear on the 4G. I also found one in carbon fiber, I couldn't find 26 tooth in brass pinion wire in 60 pitch. So here are some pictures of what I've did so far. Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Rick that is nothing short of AWESOME!! We all know why too. Because those are like finding a unicorn anymore. I hope that you might be able to offer a few for sale, but no matter what that gear looks pretty perfect to me! Great job Sir!!

You got me hooked Jeff. I did get a 20t crown gear for it i didn't have any when I had put it together. I have a couple ideas floating around to change the top plate I made up. I'll see how it pans out and add my changes in here. Skillet

I machined another gear. Still trying to make it for the 4G unlimited's. This one has a little more surface area for the axle. Still learning and want to try some different stuff on the next one. I'm going to try and machine a .030 or so shoulder on the back side (shimm side) of the gear to space it from rubbing the chassis, and try to lighten it a little too ? Any ideas and some input would be appreciated. The one in the center is a 15T I picked up on ebay a few months back that gave me the idea of trying to machine some. Don't know who made it ? The one on the right is the latest one I did. Still a 16T. Haven't been able to figure out how the do 15T on my dividing head yet.

Rick, 16 tooth is just fine. the middle gear is similar to the one I have that Eric Hirt (Mobydidit) from Lancaster PA made. I don't think you need to lighten them. so glad to see you trying to get this to work. I am trying to get hold of Eric and maybe he can assist you with the parameters for a 15 tooth. in any case, I am in for some once you can make enough to sell, if you decide to do that. have a safe, happy and prosperous New Year al

I wish I had something to add Rick but your way ahead of me. The four gear unlimited just get us close and will make the chassie fit the gear. :-)

Nice job Rick, what are you using to cut and measure the teeth?

I like that last one A LOT!! Those teeth are deep for a good mesh. 15t...16t...or 17t would all be of interest to me! Awesome job man that gear looks perfect! This is exciting to think about because I've never been able to tune the 4g Unlimited with anything other than a 20t Wizzard gear. This would open up all kinds of new possibilities on the build and bodies. The tire I have to use to make the big gear work is big so that limits me to open wheel bodies....dragsters and altereds.

Nice job Rick, what are you using to cut and measure the teeth? Dave to answer your question here is how I'm doing it so far in my Okie Machine Shop Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr This is my $100 mini lathe I use to turn the rod down and hog out the center area. Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr This is the dividing head I got off ebay that if you do the math right it will cut the teeth evenly spaced. Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr This is the 60 degree double cutter that I found because I couldn't find a 60 pitch gear cutting set anywhere. I have a metric gear cutting set ordered from China but don't know if it's going to be small enough ? Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Then I put it back in the lathe to cut the back side. Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr Untitled by rick williamson, on Flickr These are the measurements I come up with so far. I'm trying to keep it around .090 thick which gives you room to shim, and around .320 diameter and maybe see if I can go a little bigger later ? If I don't GOOF it takes about a hour from start to finish. There about .003 to .006 out of round because of my lathe, but the little testing I've done seems to be ok ? More testing is needed.

Rick, that is certainly a lot of work. thank you for giving it a try. I'll see if I can get Eric Hirt in touch with you for some tips, he made 15 tooth brass crowns years ago.
